He was a horrible hire. It still shocks me that anyone thought it was a good hire.
It doesn't help that Wisky is another Big Ten poverty program but hiring Luke, even if they come back to win this game, was a mistake.

He’s a doofus. Where are all the people who wanted us to hire him now? Man we dodged a bullet when they worked things out with Rhule. Fickel was either plan B or C. Leipold and Kleiman started out okay but they’re floundering now. Some of that might be NIL
I'm not doubting you in any way, but why do you think it was a bad hire? Just for Wisconsin or most P4 schools?
Fickel has been a coordinator at a big time program and had success as a HC. At the time, to me, seemed like a good hire. Maybe just a bad hire for Wiscy?
It doesn't help that he is horrible with the press and fans. He has the personality of a doorstop.
He was great at Cincy because of Ridder who won like 45 games as a starting QB.
It just made me think that without an NFL (sort of) QB that he would struggle, like most coaches would. And so far that is what we are seeing.
Should have kept Jim Leonhard as HC and continued the Alvarez way.
They had everything in place.
At least to be decent.
But their AD just had to outsmart everyone.

I watched him make mind numbingly stupid calls and decisions when he was at Cinci. He may be fine as a DC, but he’s not a good HC. He was viewed as a safe hire by risk averse ADs. They would have been better off with Tim Albin from Ohio or the Montana State head coach. Very risky hires though that could cost you your job quickly. Kind of the same for Leonhard but he would have gotten 3-4 years and IMO could have kept them in the 7-8 win range.
I was on the train for a bit. It's pretty obvious we made a better choice.
Fickel's buyout at the end of this season is around 25 million.

Maryland and Wisky is not a pleasant game to watch. They're competing to see who is the bigger clown outfit.
Yeah maybe he’s not as gonzo as I thought. Why do ADs do that to their school? He should have been happy to sign a much less lucrative deal than that and if not, next candidate up. I said when we hired Rhule that I would have rather had Montana State’s head coach than Fickell. Not sure if that guy is still at MSU or not.

When you are at home, trailing Maryand 20-0 at halftime, your program sucks.
Not that it would have matter, but Wiscy QB just took a 20 yard sack after being in FG range... so bad.

Leipold is exceeding expectations. Pair him with an ace recruiting staff and some resources and he’d be killing it at a place like Nebraska

There is some truth to that but in reality the AD made the mistake. All Luke did was cash a winning lotto ticket.
Just such a weird hire to begin with. Leonard seemed to be the logical next pick especially at a place like Wisconsin. Feels like there was more to that story but will probably never know

I have family with MSU ties, so I like watching him tear it up for the Bobcats. Since my MBA alma mater is Wyoming, I’m selfishly hoping their find a way to poach him back and start putting together good teams again.
I’m a little iffy on the FCS guys in P4 with NIL, but I’m certainly interested to see how Rogers does at Wazzu and Entz at Fresno State
