If Michigan has so much money and people saying Dusty May would never leave there, then why is his salary so low? I mean it’s not low compared to mine, but he makes less than Mark Pope. Way less than some other top coaches. Michigan will always be mainly a football school imo.

Don’t know but as soon as you start talking to a guy like that, Michigan will just pay him more money. You could definitely kick the tires and at least make them pay up

He's definitely getting another year, but his momentum is gone, and the fan base will be skeptical unless and until he starts winning consistently.

There's no way to know what next year's team will look like. Not in this era. But if I were him, I'd load up on shooters and go out swinging playing my preferred style.

That's why we hired him in the first place.

Anyone who says he will be fired if the season gets worse just doesn't have a grasp on how it works in college ball.

No coach is going to come here unless we make him the highest paid in college basketball to a program that fires a second year coach after beating Duke, Gonzaga,Florida and sweeping UT in his first year and is (likely) to finish the season above .500

and remember, Hurley and Drew turned us down, so you can't count on us getting a top 5 coach to replace Pope no matter what the paycheck is.

I think Pope deserves a third year so long as he doesn’t miss the dance. If we don’t get in, then he should be fired. No excuse and completely unacceptable to miss the tournament at Kentucky. He doesn’t have a title on his resume like Cal did when it happened in 2013.

We have to do our due diligence on the next hire and make sure to not take a knee jerk reaction and hire another coach like BCG or Pope. I hope the Board of Trustees intervene and tell Mitch it’s time for him to retire.

It’s tough because I don’t really think there are a lot of options that we can confidently say would come that have a good enough resume.
I feel like we would get turned down by most of the names we really, really want. I say if you don’t get a top name, find a young guy and take a chance.

Florida done their due diligence and got Golden and it has turned out great for them. We had a poster on here for years that always said Golden was the real deal before he went to Florida. We have to be patient and get it right.

Because their AD didnt overpay in a panic move—at least for basketball. We’ll see if UM overpaid for football lol.

Gillispie's firing wasn't only tied to wins and losses, he had lost the team from being ...unstable...and the parents were constantly meeting with Mitch to address his abuses as a coach. The team quit on him and Barnhart had to step in. Gillispie refusal to meet the obligations of the UK coach also played a role, so its not an apt comparison

He’s definitely going to get a third year I believe. I just wonder how the boosters are going to be about donations moving forward.

I’ve noticed the Pope defenders always point out to Dan Hurleys record and popes. They don’t admit what UConn’s record was before he got there and how they improved each season. Hurley gave them reasons to give him time. Sometimes the record doesn’t tell the whole story. Pope isn’t really giving us good examples to believe that he can turn this around. I hope he can, because it will suck to have to fire one of our own.
Dan Hurley is kind of a anomaly
..but he still atleast one his conference and conference tournament before being hired to a power school [Uconn].

He also made the dance with Rhode island..and made it to the 2nd round twice... a much bigger accomplishment than making the dance with byu , pope never won his conference or conference tournament.. or win more than 25 games or a tournament game.

Most won’t like this, but after this disaster year, Pope will improve slightly next year, say 8-10 losses. Administration will go slack-jawed. That will buy him a fourth year.

A lot of you are so microwaved it is funny. Read back through the posts.
Before the year, as soon as we had the recruits on campus, there was cheering and excitement.
The team beat Purdue and there was talk of potentially being a top 5 team.
Then injuries happened and everyone tempered their expectations, claiming we needed a healthy team.
Well, I didn’t see the last few games due to family trip, but we are healthy. The team now needs some time to work against others.
They are going to be good moving forward.
If you watched the last 2 games, your post would look completely different, trust me.

Not only that, but if he gets to a sweet 16 this year or next, he's getting a 4th year.
Yeah, our standards are E8, or bust, but that's not Barnhart's standard and it would be a bad look to fire a guy that made two sweet 16's in 3 years.

That's probably the worst case scenario.

If he turns things around...great. If he continues to struggle, then fire him and hire a more qualified coach. But the third option is him being just good enough to not fire and we get several years of mediocrity.

I think the general consensus among the talking heads including Matt Jones is that Pope is in over his head, but they aren't going to verbalize it at this point in the season because Pope could turn it around and they don't want to publicly undermine him.

I'm all in on Pope and it shows in my responses, but I'm not so far out of touch that I can't admit he simply isn't measuring up as a second year coach for Kentucky at the moment.

His downfall is going to be to stick with his current approach in the hopes that he can coach the players up. Its not too late in the season for a turnaround but the damage is done. There is no 2,3, or 4 seed for this team. It feels like a 5 seed would be a dramatic turnaround for a team that people are questioning will even make the tournament at this point. 6,7,8 seeds are kinda last 4 in territory for a blue blood program. Barnhart is on record during the Tubby years saying 8 seeds aren't the standard for Kentucky.

My suggestion to him (Pope) would be to recognize there are players he can't put in a game unless the circumstances require it (fouls, injury, sickness) and the reality is he doesn't even have 6 guys he can trust to play intelligently at the moment.

Get a 7 man rotation and put the rest of the season on their shoulders. Don't worry about the fallout or what happens at the end of the season, you have to prove your coaching chops now.

Close out the season strong, make some noise in the SEC tournament, and win two tourney games. I think at this point that is best case scenario

This is all on MITCH BARNHART he cares more about Womens Volleyball and the Rifle teams than our Basketball Program. He needs to be fired FIRST, he cannot be part of any search for our next Men's basketball Coach !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Show your displeasure with BARNHART by calling . I cannot believe our totally incompetent athletic director paid BYU 6 million dollars for Popes buyout. But it does seem BYU put it to good use...

BYU has never looked better without Pope and there's no overlooking that.

They deposited our check to Dybantsa’s checking account. Got the best player and upgraded at the coaching position

We can only hope that would be the case. He's responsible for way too many idiotic mistakes. Worst AD of all time!!! Made a good hire with the women's team though. I guess even a blind squirrel will find an acorn now and then.
June 26 then he's special assistant to President Eli. Barney can't relinquish control and that's a major problem.
UK needs fresh innovative thinking. Mitch thinks Volleyball and the Riffle team are indicative to success. Steps over a dollar to pick up a dime.

He needed to hire a GM day one. He definitely needs to hire one NOW. Pope can’t recruit. Someone will need to sit at the table and do what he can’t.
Exactly. The job is too big and demanding to not delegate responsibility. At least you'd have help and a potential fall guy. To apparently be so smart, his management of the program has lacked critical components.

Heck football has more coaches than players at this point. Hire a freaking basketball businessman and communicate the objectives.

You left out the part about +50% of games against Quad 1 teams Pope has been down double digits. There's another stat about losing by 18 or more points in so many games as well.

It isn't the KY basketball standard! Sure he's won some big games but he's more than lost his fair share as well. Unfortunately, this isn't a one way mirror.

That Nostalgia bait is hell of a drug and MB is hooked on it. Of course Pope is getting a 3rd year, MB is not going to fire him.
The likeliest scenario for Pope to not get another year is if boosters intervene like they did when Barnhart was going to bring back Stoops for next year.

Save us boosters, you’re our only hope.

ah yes this is the part where all the national figures tell us all to be patient and just wait and see while every other team is making win-now moves. we've seen this story before, with Tubby and Cal at the end. lol why do people still fall for this? these people want us to suck. they hope pope is here as long as Rupp was

I'm just stating why he'll be given a 3rd year. Whatever the bad is at this point, if we continue down this path for the remainder of the season, he will be back if he chooses to do so

I wouldn't take Dan Hurley under any circumstances at all personally. Also pass on Drew and Izzo.
Hubert Davis LOL.

Most of the rest of that list I'd be willing to roll the dice on.

Even Cal: I'm not there now, but I might actually be persuaded that Cal was worth another shot IF Mitch Barnhart was banished somewhere far away and his successor was drastically different.

Pope will be UK's coach next year unless he resigns or there is a scandal. I cannot see Mitch making a change even if this season continues to be embarrassing and rudderless.
