It's interesting that I dislike a coach more who left us in an ash heap vs. one who left us #1 in the nation as a program with a title contending roster returning?
And went to our instate rival and got a Card tat plus underage hookers. Sorry they both suck.

Pitino's first stop post-UK was Boston. That's a meaningful related note. He didn't up and leave us for Louisville. He took the best college job available when he returned, at a program that most UK fans haven't taken seriously since the Bush Sr. administration.

Watch the replay that clock started way way late it was touched by a St John's player then knocked up in the air then Baylor guy got it and the clock was still at 4.1 that entire way to that point.
Yeah, I still think he would've got it off with like .3 or so left.

Nonetheless, that's not why they lost. They lost because they gave up way too many points in the 2nd Half, and then couldn't buy a FT. If that SJs dude hit that FT, it would be in TOT at the worst.

Yeah but I think with pitino it’s clear he wants to be liked by us and wants to be apart of the BBN now. Cal doesn’t want any relationship with us and was just here to be here.
Cal will want a relationship again, so will we. Just too soon. He did win a title. We're not gonna shun him away for eternity.

Some of us have moved on and are now thankful for a coach that took us from probation to #1 in the nation in two years. Maybe you should be grateful. Without Pitino, there's a good chance we'd be Indiana right now. We were trending towards disaster in the late-80s.

It's called "life's too short to be pissed off about a 25 year old grudge that had nothing to do with you."

There are UK fans that will the to argue we were in better shape when Pitino took over than when Cal did. There’s no way those fans were alive in the 80’s. We nearly got the death penalty

I agree(hopefully) but cal is the most sturbborn person ever and will probably hold a grudge for a long time.

And flipped off our fans at Rupp! Yeah what a great guy!
I don’t care what anyone says, I love Rick. His entire career arch is a fascinating combination of drama and comedy. Flipping off the fans at Rupp is exactly what a character such as him should be doing.

He’s the best character in college basketball. I really hope he’s able to take St. John’s to a Final Four and become the first coach to take four* schools there. It would be the cherry on top of everything he’s done.

And you accused me of making a stupid comparison.
Did it occur to you that I was using sarcasm to compare some fans and their overblown maniacal outrage regarding Pitino?

No? You're usually better at picking up the vibe, my friend.

I dislike one cuz the ash heap he left us in, the other because he is an ash heap himself.
Yes, well you were playing "Nearer My God To Thee" when Cal's Titanic finally went down. You were one of the last to leave the ship, my man.

What's that have to do with disliking Pitino still? lmao
Everything.

It completely soils your reputation as a poster capable of making sound evaluations in these discussions. You supported Cal through 9-16, through St. Peter's, through Shaedon Sharpe, through the 2nd round loss, and even through Oakland until it became clear Cal was leaving.

Most of us never took Louisville seriously, so the outrage seems forced from some of you, and even weirder when it's clear so many of you supported Cal until the end but still nurse a grudge against Pitino 27 years later.

So my thoughts on basketball cloud my judgement of a coach as a man, as an honorable person, as a guy I want to cheer for? Yeah, nope.

You and fans like you are basically the Sal Tessio of the fan base. You loved UK, but not enough. You were more loyal to Calipari than you were to BBN. Tragically, you essentially went against BBN once it became clear Cal was no longer fit for the job.

Just like Tessio, Cal's abandonment and attempted destruction of our program "screwed up all your arrangements."

You've attempted to seek clemency here, "for old time's sake", but you're still taking the long car ride out to the corn fields with some others who supported Cal through all of it.

Ultimately, you enabled Cal and went against the real family - Kentucky.

And here's a depiction of you, when finally you realized Cal was leaving us for Arkansas.

"I can't go either, Sal" was the response of BBN to fans like you. You're taking that car ride alone, ole chap.

The only person who enabled Cal was Barnhart. And then Barnie won the lottery by Cal breaching the terms of his contract. Otherwise most of this Hog team would still be wearing UK jerseys.

The Rupp Rafters Jinx strikes again. That's two tonight.
It’s not that deep. It was just a game tracking thread. Stated multiple times “can St John’s hold on…Scott Drew made adjustments let’s see what happens. Etc”

Most posters like to follow and chat about interesting games on here on Kentucky off nights. Especially when one team involved has played a team coming up on our schedule

No one hates pitno anymore because for about 5 years he went bonkers trying to keep up with cal. hiring prostitues, paying players through adidas it was wild. he cost them a banner and Louisville crashed and burned for years. so he did betray us going there. But his jealously of cal led him to send UofL to the dumpster. its hard to hate him when in the end he destroyed em.

Agree.

This game is def bringing that Gonzaga game Into perspective though. Anyone who felt like we were likely to lose that game on the road has to feel a little better seeing that it was just as much about Baylor being mediocre than it was Gonzaga being dominant
I still believe Gonzaga is a great team. Obviously Baylor is flawed in some way. They have talent but something is not right,.

I'm rooting for Rick.. even before he made his pseudo return to the BBN the last few months. I think he might be the best college coach we've seen in modern day basketball, and pretty much everywhere he went, whether it was UK, UofL, Greece, Iona.. he did well. And I'd say the trend continues at SJU. If not the best Xs and Os coach, one of for sure. He's the epitome of "doing more with less".

Did he leave UK the right way? No, he didnt. Is he a model citizen? Probably not. But in no way do I believe guys like Coach K or Bill Self are any better of people.. they're just better at not getting caught.

Idk, I'm a fan.
Self is better at not getting caught? I think it's more correct to say better at getting it swept under the rug (and not the one on his head). His players are caught multiple times each season, they just somehow keep acting like the head coach has 0 idea what his players do even though he keeps recruiting these low character guys.

Since the thread got off topic anyway. One big difference for me between Cal and Pitino is that I never despised Pitino WHILE he was coaching UK.

No coach is more teflon than Self. His players are convicts-to-be and he never gets called on it.

Exactly we were in shambles when Pitino took over and he resurrected the program and left it high on the mountain! Cal just took over the program from a few years of down recruiting years we were flat lining and he left it exactly how he found it flat lining and breaking all the wrong records! These young people don't even understand I swear!

It was at least a full second and he wouldn't have got it off or he would have had to shoot from farther out and likely missed.

People say all the time "That isn't what cost them the game" when it was exactly what cost them the game the final shot goes in your lose and if it misses you win it is exactly what cost them the game because that is how it ended.

You can name a million things in every game on how a team could won or lost but in the end sometimes it comes down to 1 play and if it does then that 1 play will always determine if you win or lose and nothing else at that point.

Normally I'd agree. But they missed 12 FTs. Heck, if he hit that one right before the play, at worst it's tied. You also cant give the other team 47 freaking points in a half and expect to win.

If we had lost that way with Cal, we'd be griping about the FTs and the 47 point lack of defense half.

Baylor didn't win that one; SJs flat out lost it.
