The story of Ross Vance's performance today is even better in the bigger picture. First, he allowed just 1 of the 2 hits Oklahoma collected this morning and he also managed to get through his 8.2 IP of relief in fewer than 100 pitches.

Additionally, this emergency outing must've been even more satisfying for Vance in context of the critical 3-run HR he allowed in relief during the decisive 7th inning of a 4-2 loss in the middle game last weekend at Lubbock. You have to think Ross was appreciative of getting another chance with the outcome in doubt.

WVU baseball is currently in a 20-year NCAA tournament drought, so our postseason experience over that span has been limited to conference tournaments only. Nevertheless, I have to think Vance just delivered the single-best performance under duress for Mountaineer baseball in the last two decades.

Hopefully some other fans were able to see it. Glad I got up early here on the West Coast, because Ross made himself a memory for a lifetime.

I remember from last year the format is really goofy, can someone explain it for us non baseball followers?

If Texas Tech wins, then WVU has the #1 hurdle to overcome in the next game. Double-elimination, but it's much easier if you stay with the winners bracket because you avoid having to beat the same team 2 games in a row. Let's hope. Mazey got this ship turned around in midstream. Remarkable!

The 8 schools who qualified for the conference tournament are divided into two pools of 4 teams. Within each pool, the format is double elimination. However, when the two pool winners meet for the championship it is a single winner-take-all game.

In other words, a pool winner who is 3-0 has no extra advantage in the championship game over a pool winner who is 3-1 or 4-1. The unbeaten team would not have to be defeated twice once it gets to that point.

So basically, the game against Texas Tech is a must win if we actually have a shot at winning this thing? We would then only have to beat KSU to punch our ticket to the finals?

No, pretty sure if we win today, we play the winner of tcu and OSU!

Actually TCU/OSU are in the other pool. If we win today, we would wait for the loser's bracket to play out - then just need to win one of two games. That produces the champion of our pool that then takes on the champion of the other pool for the championship of the tournament.

Not quite. Monroeer has it correct.

WVU is in the pool with TT, KSU, and Oklahoma. Oklahoma has just eliminated Kansas St 13-7. The TT/WVU winner will have some time to rest and wait for the outcome of the loser's bracket. The TT/WVU loser will next play Oklahoma.

KST is out and now OK moves on to await the loser of our game (WVU/TT).

So if we win, that means when we next play OU or TT again, they have to win twice?
