the fake punt was exactly this type of situation, and in a game where the opponent has a good passing game, this would likely have led to 3 points. not smart football. odds do not favor some of these kinds of decisions. recognizing what kind of game you are in is also important. This was a low scoring field position game at the time. if we are in a 35-28 game going into halftime that is different situation decisions need to consider all the factors and situation in the game.

Example: you are in a close game, down 14-10 and have weathered a storm. There is 1:05 left in the half, and you just got a punt and the ball is on your 10 yard line. Your offense has not moved the ball consistently and having trouble stopping opponent. The opponent has 1 timeout, and you have all 3 timeouts. What would you call? What do you think the current PSU staff would call in that situation?

My call is run the ball - maybe even take a knee. Get to halftime without an incident.

Take a shot deep downfield on first down. 2 or maybe 3 receivers in pattern, everyone else blocks. It's either open or get out of the pocket and throw it into the 3rd row. If it doesn't work, run the clock out. If it does, adjust play calling accordingly and try for at least a field goal.

I don't necessarily mind that they went for it on 4th down. What I think is stupid is taking your quarterback off the field, and expecting the damn punter to throw a deep ball. If you are going to fake it, why not just line up and let the best player on your team have the ball?

Or, if the play's not there, just punt it anyway.
