We're back in swiss chese territory. You would think Fitz had learned. If this is our defense, NU is going nowhere.

Our legend of a DC that drove our winning seasons the last 13 years retires, and Fitz goes and gets the guy who was an understudy under Greg Colby.

The so called experts talked about the NFL experience, and scoffed when people pointed out that that NFL experience was generally excessively bad. JON has never led a quality D at any level of the game, and that continued tonight.

Would have been better off to elevate McGarigle or MacPherson and just keep our system intact.

Why Fitz Why?

Totally agree. Should have promoted McGarigle. He’s earned it and there would be continuity with the system.

It’s only one game folks.

That being said, it was painful to watch. I’ll need to watch the replay to see if was due more to youth (GN2 said that on WGN radio) or scheme.

But the tackling was awful. We lost a lot of experience to graduation and had 8 new starters.

11 games left in the season… we’ll see if JON can adapt to the college game.

Hankwitz was the honorary captain last night. I’d be curious to hear his thoughts.

Tackling was atrocious

I wish there were something any of us could do to get a better DC right now, but we'll be stuck with this screamin' disaster for a while. If we're lucky, maybe Fitz will correct this huge mistake after one season. All that coaching talent out there and NU had to find a guy that has the least.

After one game...puhlease. Let’s back off the edge guys. Am I concerned yes but this in-fact is game 1. Let’s see how they respond. You’re not getting Hank from retirement and whoever you get now is not going to be the answer.

Yes that is true but the problem of fitz is that we will be stuck with his buddy until his buddy wants to leave.
Now Turk, that's not necessarily true. We might be stuck with him longer than we would like, but remember that Fitz DID fire Colby and Fitz DID fire McCall.

Eventually, Fitz does come around if his hand is forced.

Yes Sir.

Yes, I am concerned. Maybe it won't get any better this season. But I say we have some reasons to think it will.
1) We always start slow.
2) Fitz will get involved with the defense, and as he's said to the media, as long as I'm here this defense is going to have a lot of Hank in it. We'll see how much he puts his foot forward.
3) Lets see, how many times have we won the Big Ten West the past three years? .... oh, two! I guess our coaches know a little about good defense! Do you really think McGarigle, McPherson and Marty Long.... AND Fitz, are going to just stand by all season and let O'Neill bleep up our chances to have a decent defense?

Put the bong down. O'Neill is here for awhile. We gotta work with the guy.

When Franklin took over the PSU job, he brought his buddy in as the DC.

Didn't end up well for his buddy - the powers that be forced Franklin's hand to make a change.
One key difference is that Fitz is the powers that be at NU

Wrong. PSU had a good defense. His buddy Bob Shoop had multiple SEC offers. He got a nice raise.

I’ve see enough
Only a fool would keep him UNLESS we are trying to break the all time record at NU for rusning yardage allowed.

Does anyone know what the all time record is (Dark ages included) of total rushing yards allowed in a season?

Fans wanna know

My bad - got the OC and DC mixed up.

Franklin fired his good bud, Donovan, after that season (also fired the OC from last season after 1 yr).

Tho some say that Donovan was merely the scapegoat and that the O was designed by Franklin.

Unlike someone like Day or Riley - who have one side of the game covered, Fitz, like Franklin, is a CEO coach who needs to make the right hires as his coordinators.

Orgeron doesn't look that great without Aranda and Brady (and Burrow); Bo Pellini was a disastrous hire as DC for LSU.

And when Saban hired Kiffin to change the Bama O (knowing he needed a more high-powered O to match Clemson, Oklahoma), guess where the outgoing Bama OC ended up going?

Part of the reason why Michigan has struggled against the elite programs is due to Harbaugh not adapting with the times.
