I know it's been discussed from time to time but it seems availability and technology changes rapidly. What is the optimum cut the cord set up with just an Internet subscription and maybe a Roku device?

mega, I dropped cable and went with roku (includes sling/ESPN and basic cable, netflix and amazon) and old fashioned antennae. Everything I ever watched or wanted is on those stations. I will never again have to call Dish. I'm never going back.

Just looked at the Sling site and man that's tempting. No Fox Sports though which could mean several football games and most Thunder games. Any fix for that?

Also, you can only use your account on one device at a time? That seems like a deal breaker for a family.

I'm a Cox subscriber and currently all-in for $225/mo. I could probably keep my Cox internet and get 2 Sling accounts for half the price.

OK, so here is what I did and am planning to do.

Our premium cable TV package bundled with high speed internet (necessary because 3 kids with devices and we do some work related file uploading/downloading from home) and a home phone (which I never charged or plugged in. who has home phones anymore?) was already hovering at $200 per month when I got a rate increase of $80 before tax which officially pushed my cable bill into car payment territory. That was ********.

So, after this thread, a similar facebook thread and some internet research, I am convinced that I want to do the whole internet based TV thing... eventually.

I am going with DirectTV which is $58 per month for the first year and then goes to $80ish for the second year for TV programming at home and keeping my Cox high speed internet which I got down to $73. That is a combo I can live with.

In the meantime, I am going the Roku direction at my studio to try out various combos and subscriptions to dial in the perfect internet TV plan. I'll update this thread with what I find out and how I set that up. Uverse internet at the studio and frankly it's slow and kinda sucky compared to home, but for one device at a time it's OK. I guess.

/nerd @Rulz, dealing with the right combo of internet and TV service feels like a character in Fallout 4 trying to mod up a shotgun or power armor. /nerd

Basic cable / internet and KODI. We have a Digistream box but there are others.
This. You can watch anything imaginable on Kodi for nothing, including stuff like live UFC pay per views. It's like having live TV whenever you like with a DVR that records everything that is broadcast. An endless supply of movies too.

Since you asked about DTV as well...

I have DirecTV and have loved it. Service has been great, even in storms I rarely lose signal and when I do I can either watch the standard def channel and get video or I just jump online to watch the weather.

Downside for you is that Cox is the best internet in the city, and it's not even close (unless you have access to Bixby fiber).

I kept Cox internet. And you are right, the performance is unbeatable - as surprisingly, is the price. It's the TV service rates in which Cox billing is higher than 12 hippies.

I was contemplating a jump too but DirecTV cut my bill by $70 per to keep my business for another year. My account number is around 50,000. I bought my first dish at Best Buy the day it became available in Okc. I had to install it myself.
When they see I have spent around $2400 per year for 20 years, they do what they can to please me. I agreed to a 1 year contract.

I received all new Genie Equiptment which is badass, $5 off per month of all premium movie channels, $25 off per mo for customer loyalty and some other incentives. I have cox int and they tried to double the price in January too. My options are limited in my area but after a call I'm paying around $80 per. I don't know if that's good or not but the other option is ATT DSL line which was my previous service and it stunk.

I've talked to some of the ATT big shots and they say a new system is in the works. A pod will be installed and it will be the sourse for wireless internet/tv for the area it controls. It sounds like a good idea for acreage areas like mine.

I don't think it will be long before DirecTV and dish see a big decline in customers.
