The criticism of the Oline by our fans is a little overblown. We had pretty good success run blocking last year. In pass protection our issue was at tackle but even that wouldn't have been near the problem that it was if:
A) Towles doesn't hold onto the ball entirely to long and bail on the pocket instead of stepping up into it
B) If Dawson had dialed up passing plays that didn't take so too long to develop
C) GAA wasn't forced into action out of position at tackle as a true freshmen because of injury
D) If the wide receivers had done a better job of getting seperation and getting through press coverage
The middle of our Oline was solid for most of the season. Moving GAA back inside and getting Stenberg off of his redshirt is going to help reinforce the middle of the line quite a bit. Young and Leavitt are going to help a lot on the outside.
I don't get the impression that Eddie Gran is the kind of coach that will blow smoke up the fans' asses with false praise of players or position groups. He seems very excited about the prospects of our offensive line everytime he speaks. He's even went as far to say it's the best/deepest Oline he's been around and he spent 15 years coaching in the SEC.
JR went back and watched the whole season last year at its conclusion and graded every position group after focusing on each of them individually. I believe he gave the Oline a B- and shared the opinion that while the Oline had struggled at times that overall it had played better than most gave them credit for. I know some of you will think that's ludicrous but it's true. A case could be made that after RB, the secondary, and WR that the Oline is our deepest/most talented/most experienced unit. I think they will be the most improved group on the team this year and it will have more to do with a change in scheme than the players we're adding
It was mostly Wolfe getting beat by Allen when the two's were in. Wolfe is a RS freshman and will be 3rd string when Landon Young gets to campusStoops' quote on O-Line....This is not good:
On offensive line performance on Saturday: “Not as good obviously. You saw it, if you watch the scrimmage, pass rush in predictable pass, we weren’t doing anything fancy, we were just rushing. In predictable pass, they were getting beat. In particular the tackles. But in the run game, we do feel like there’s some depth, in particular inside. We need to continue to develop some tackles.”
