Until about five minutes ago I had MS as the winner of this game. I've changed my mind while thinking about this post, and here's why.

1. I think MS rode a wave last season, and in the end, slightly over achieved. Don't get me wrong, I think they got better as the year went along, and by week 14 had become a championship level team.

2. Given number 1, I think MS Swag (as they have earned the name back) will be a tad overvalued (not overrated!) week 1. That means little in theory, but in practice what that means to me is that MS and GW are closer in talent than what the experts think.

3. I do not overlook that this is week one. What that means to me is that kinks are entirely worked out, which means we may see some penalties or turnovers. I think MS needs offense more than GW does.

4. While I have mad respect for both HC's, I think Coach H is the best defensive coach/teacher in the state. Given 3, I think GW gets a nice big advantage there.

5. GW is at home. It helps a little.

Both teams deserve mad props for once again being great non-con schedulers. Both teams will be ready to play week one. In the end, I can't get over GW's ability to tackle as a neutralizer to MS's great speed, especially in week one.

If this game was later in the season, I likely have a different opinion as I think MS has more potential to grow, but being it's not, I take the hitters 21-14.

I'll take the over

I think a fast sideline to sideline Hitter defense matches up well against MS's attack. Also think that GW's backfield will be strong this year. Going out on a limb but I'll take GW 24-7.

Gw by a couple tds. The loss of Kevin Jarvis will make it tough for MS. That guy completely changed that team when he went to defense. Unreal.

So one thing I'm wondering is whether MS will again start the season without guys playing both ways. It always seems like they start their seasons a little wobbly on defense and keep their studs fresh until the inevitable deep post season run.

I'm wondering if we will see a LA/MS like shootout we saw in Week 2 last year.

So calpreps agrees with you showing a 35-24 MS win on neutral field. It doesn't say but I'm pretty home field is worth 3.

Not sure how often MS plays on real grass, but Duchon when it's wet can be tricky for speedsters. No sign of rain for the rest of the week, but don't worry, the sprinklers are set to run for the 48 hours prior to kickoff. Hope the Greek Freek owns some 1 1/2" cleats.

No worries. I got plenty of cleats! ;)

Just checked and the field looks like US Open level rough. I stole the lawnmower so there is not a chance they can cut it.

Your boys may want to wear shin guards to cut down on the sting of the cat tails.

JCHILL:

Unfortunately, your pose as an grizzled veteran handicapper will be dismantled this Saturday and revealed a pure sorcery.

I love the matchup and love the fact it takes place in week one. Many schools and coaches would prefer to have one or two games under their belt before confronting a heavyweight, but both Inserra and Hetlet have demonstrated a willingness to venture into an area few others would dare.

Although your breakdown more closely resembles zig-zags, I do believe you are right GW's biggest advantage amounts to the home-field advantage.

Despite the fact both Inserra and Hetlet have acquitted themselves as able coaches, I must give the advantage to MS. As a dispassionate observer, I tend to believe MS will win and could emerge victorious by as many as ten points.

The business of predictions is virtually identical to skipping through a minefield, but my instinct says MS.

I'm sure we will have a healthy discussion over this later.
