I put little to no thought in spring games. They are usually so tightly scripted with bizarre rules established by the HC they reflect very little of what's really going on. Don't forget UK's spring "star" last year was Mike Drennen. The same Mike Drennen who saw ZERO action in '22 and has since moved on to parts unknown.
Will be interesting for Florida this year. They have a really hard schedule and a lot of question marks (QB, OL, WR, LB).
Napier has done amazing on the recruiting trail but I’ve not seen much as a coach to date. If they have another losing season will the recruits stick with them?
Feels like if they have patience he will turn them around just on talent. But it’s going to be tough to have patience when they look and see the quick turnarounds Tenn and SC have went through.
He might yet develop, but that clip is nothing more than click bait from cubelic. Drive blocking a man trying to pursue the ball away is nothing at all to write home about.
In fact, given that it doesn't look like an actual read, because QB would've pulled if so, then KG was probably supposed to try to reach that block instead of drive block.
Just clickbait material from cole. Surprising because I expected better out of him. But we are talking about the same guy who has a podcast where he wears the sponsor's hat and says their name every five seconds. So maybe he just transitioned into the money grab phase
I went and watched the spring game with every snap that Goodwin plays. From what i can tell, he seems to have the very same issues that he had when he played in the Army All-American game, once he played other elite competition. Footwork is absolutely terrible and he has difficulty consistently setting the edge, he flashes some quickness for his size, but then disappears completely. It's puzzling...
Cole's play here where he pancakes a guy who had atrocious foot and hand placement doesn't really show me much. Watch the clip and the D-Lineman's feet and hands. He crosses his feet as he engages Goodwin and tries to run sideways while squared up. D-lineman HAS to get skinny there and make himself a smaller target! Hands were at Goodwin's shoulders instead of close and in his chest. My 100 lbs. grandmother could have baptized the guy.
Ouch. Their offense was not great. Again, hard to tell with a spring game concerning their strengths and weaknesses but I was never sold on Mertz. Glad to have Leary.
Goodwin might HAVE to find a way to work in at guard. I don't know if he has the skill set or the quickness to play on an island at tackle. Here's the thing, his center of gravity, can it allow him to play guard? Or is he tackle or bust like Penei Sewell is?
One play doesn't make him a solid SEC tackle. He never got a sniff at UK when our line needed a definite lift. Wohlabaugh got more PT than Goodwin, which should tell you something. KG may develop into a good player, but I seriously doubt t it'll be this year.
Spring games does not really show much, if the defense is really good, fans say the offense sucks, if the offense is really good, they say the defense sucks, if both sides are equal, they say the team is boring.
You are definitely right in that it shows nothing but it’s a point of contact for fans. I can’t think of another sport where you get less than college football. You get 7 to 8 home games (with UK, less home games for other schools) depending on the year.
All other college sports play more in front of their fans. NFL has more as well plus preseason and playoffs.
I don’t think it’s too much to ask to give the fans something to enjoy in the spring.
