Flying with children

I have very little experience flying myself and none flying with young children.

We are flying to Florida this summer and I was curious to the car seat situation for my 2 year old. Do I take her car seat with us on the plane? Do I rent one from the car rental agency once in Florida? Do I just throw her in the rental car like we used to 30 years ago?

Advice? Experiences?

Agreed, take one with you. Take a look and see how much car rental companies charge for car seat rentals. I promise it will be cheaper to just check it. I certainly wouldn't throw said child in the car like they did 30 years ago. All it would take is one person to see that and CPS would be banging on your hotel room door.

And for what it's worth, when traveling with my kids, we've just taken the car seats and checked them. Have never had an issue and it's been surprisingly easy.

Take the car seat with you on the plane. I've read horror stories about people trying to rent car seats (rent for a week is nearly the same as buying). Problems like the seat is not available, doesn't fit the kid or the car, etc...

When my kid was small, we put the car seat on the plane and she napped in it. As she got older, we checked it (free).

Label the car seat in a couple of places (inconspicuous) with your cell phone number, just in case.

Be sure and load her up on benedryl or dramamine. Nothing worse than the screaming and crying of a toddler with an earache for the duration of the flight.

Depends on if it can fit in the overhead. Wouldn't advise doing that. You can lug it through the airport and check it "plane side" at no additional cost. You'll just have to wait in the jet-way a while longer, which sucks for some people and can be a real drag when/if you've got a short connection. Otherwise, it's pretty simple. To do this, they will give you a tag at the gate for you to affix to your item. I do this for my medium roller all the time. You just put the tag on your item and tear away the portion with matching number, put it in your pocket in the rare instance (never has happened) that some jerk tries to take yours from one of a dozen or more identical black Samsonites. In your case, you have no worry, unless a bunch of people show up with identical car seats. Not gonna happen. After the flight, the crew with unload all of the "plane side" bags (including your car seat) at the bottom of the jet-way and you can pick it up and be on your way. Or, if you boarded outside, onto a two or three-tier bin that everybody can collect their stuff from. Piece of cake.
