All Mattt Rhule has done at the college level is win. Temple and Baylor are not exactly USC. Look at him at Nebraska. They were dead and he has them winning. It will be interesting to watch Rhule if he stays at Nebraska, or if he moves to another job at a traditional blue blood program. Having Penn State ties is not a prerequisite for the next coach.

He's hasn't done anything at Nebraska
He was handed a QB because the kid's dad played there and this year lost to a bad Michigan team. His best win is Maryland? The have the "Indiana 2024" schedule this year with Penn State falling apart. If they don't win out he flopped.
There's no one chasing Matt Rhule

We will. 8-13 in Big Ten play at Nebraska--that's definitely highly sought after
The last time a Nebraska coach won more than 3 games in the BIG was 2016. The most BIG games won by a Nebraska coach since 2016 was 3, Rhule did that each of his first two years. He also won a minor bowl game for them, again the first time they did that since 2016.

I am not a Rhule fan boy, but I give him credit for building winning programs wherever he has gone in college football.

Minor bowl games...actually all bowl games...mean nothing outside the playoff
See what Cignetti did at Indiana. And he wasn't handed a QB because of ties to Indiana.
We aren't looking to build a program. We're looking to win titles. If we weren't a major program I'd agree with you. He'd be great at any program that hasn't won recently.

This year, Nebraska has beaten three OOC cupcakes, Michigan State at home, and Maryland on the road. They have Minnesota, Northwestern, USC, and UCLA (NW and USC at home) before Penn State. Nebraska is 5-1 now. I think it is almost a lock that they can win one of those games to become bowl-eligible. Even if Nebraska only goes 3-3 the rest of the way, 8-4 is a record Nebraska hasn't achieved since 2016.

Let's see what happens. If Rhule can get Nebraska to 9-3 or 10-2, then he has really accomplished something. At this point, 8-4 is a "floor" or minimum.

All that said, Rhule's done a good job and appears to have Nebraska on an upward trajectory.

Frank Cignetti’s player will run through a brick wall for him. Most followed him JMU and say he is inspirational, that is exactly what Penn State needs!! I just don’t think they get him…I don’t think he feels Penn State is a better leap, and that sounds insane to me too.

the Nebraska experience is what concerns me. seasons with 9 or 10 wins was not acceptable, so they fired solich (I think he was the one) and went on the college football wasteland. They might just now be coming out of it.

0-11 vs top ten teams in his career. 2-23 vs top 25 teams. His last top 25 win was when he was at Temple in 2016. His only two wins vs a top 25 team was when he was at Temple. No top 25 wins since. 0-18 since leaving Temple. Nice guy. Runs clean, respectable programs, but no thank you.

Hiring him would be a sign that we have given up. He has a lower ceiling than Franklin, but for many in our fan base being part of the family is more important than the pesky facts that you list in your post.

Cignetti is everyone's favorite, especially in the SEC .
This was the big discussion on XM as I drove home from State College today. Cignetti is making $8.3 million at Indiana this year. Can PSU afford the $56 million to Franklin PLUS pay Cignetti the $10-12 million/year he would command in the coaching market right now? Not likely. Could Florida do it? Maybe? Could FSU? Maybe? But does Cignetti want to start over again at a more high profile school at 64 years old? Or does he want to make the most of his time at Indiana and probably get a raise from them for next year? The overall thought is that he stays at Indiana.

Cignetti is best to stay put, build on something already strong.

If Cignetti is not possible, I would put Jon Sumrall in our top 5. I think he is lightning in the bottle potential like Cignetti was for Indiana but at 20 years younger. He will be coaching for a p4 school next year.

His name came up on XM also with all the hot seat coaches talk and replacements.

The other issue with Cignetti going somewhere else is that his team is poised to make a run in the playoff. Any new school that hires him would have to wait until that run is over to get him in their campus and started.

Agree. Next guy needs to be exciting and young. Think Will Stein, Dillingham, etc. Hiring a Franklin peer is a mistake IMO.

I'm still convinced we're not chasing him and he's staying and Indiana because of Cuban

I agree that Matt Rhule would need some time but he is a much better head coach than he’s being given credit for and other than a 3 point loss to Michigan he has Nebraska playing hard. With a couple of lucky rolls he could get Nebraska to win 10, potentially 11 games and that means playoffs. Yeah he may be a slightly weaker recruiter than Franklin but he is a profoundly better game day coach. JMHO

Ties to PSU should be no prerequisite for the next coach. Let’s shoot high with this one because it will require someone really talented to get over that proverbial hump with the player talent cupboard being a bit empty after this season. Someone who can navigate NIL shrewdly will also be vital with this fan base and boosters.
