Features on most recent Gruden's QB Camp show.

Impressive.

Gruden really liked him.

Made a comment that he'd like to be back in coaching to work with a player like him.

I'm hearing different things that the Rams want Jared Goff and not Wentz.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times who is very tied in with Stan Kroenke the Rams owner along with Peter King of SI MMQB and Adam Sheftler of ESPN is saying it is Wentz...bottom line now the first two players will be Wentz/Goff...whether Cleveland keeps the 2nd pick or trades it to someone like San Francisco.

So Bama and Osu will drop out of the top 20. Got it!

2nd time out of 4 years this has happened...Eric Fisher #1 Overall to the Kansas City Chiefs out of Central Michigan another example...the two best defensive players in football are Khalil Mack and JJ Watt...Mack was a No Star and Watt was barely a 2*....point being...don't get hung up on HS Ratings...more on their actual game...

One outlier & that blows up a whole system?

Some folks just don't get statistics & their meaning.
Not what I actually saying....just pointing out Top 20 classes really don't = success....Texas and ND Prime Example on that end...the opposite example is Baylor

2015, first 25 picks and 30 of 32 first round picks came from power 5 conferences. 2014 29 of 32 picks came from power conferences in first round.

Guys who get no rating usually means they were not evaluated. It doesn't mean the services thought they were terrible.

Look through the NFL draft history and you'll see those guys are diamonds in the rough. They are the rare exception and not the rule. That's why they end up at smaller schools and not the Elite schools.

I'll take 4 and 5 star guys all day over zero star guys.

Little different take...myself would rather take athletic guys who are hungry-(they can be 2* or 3* guys like Aaron Donald, JJ Watt, Richard Sherman, Derek Carr, Blake Bortles, etc.. etc) and they have great coaching and development instead of subscription guys like Jake Coker-(who won in spite of himself).

It is obvious that has happened with Wentz....the Rams paid a heavy price

For every low star player who turns out big time there are thousands behind him who play up to their ranking. The reason the elite programs in college football win is because they stack their rosters with highly ranked players and when one does not pan out they have someone else waiting in the wings to pick up the slack.

I do agree you can't always look at stars (I look at offers more), but you also can't build a legit SEC program with a philosophy of trying to find a bunch of hidden gems to win with. Brooks was as successful as any coach UK has had with that strategy, but the program was still mediocre under his regime which more or less was a reflection of the overall talent on the roster.

Interesting take. I didn't see you mention a thing about Top 20 classes or specific schools in your post I quoted. Guess my reading is off again.

All those guys are off different teams with different coaches. Bama and Osu put 5 to 10 in the league every year for a reason. It's an inexact science but the #s back up the rankings more time than not. More kids get evaluated every year. Not rating a guy just means no one saw him. Not that they missed. Different styles of players are starting to get ranked differently.

I made the same argument you make we were recruiting like crap and we never could consistently beat the big guys. I'll take more stars and the coaching is either good or bad.

Wasn't Watt a TE recruit or some such?

I would too. Issue is being smart enough to know these things when the players are still in HS. Scouts & coaches aren't that all the time, just largely most of the time.

Both arguments have merit....Florida under Zook and ND under Weiss and the later years with Mack Brown at Texas had consistent Top 10 classes...but results were awful...Dantonio @ Michigan State, Pinkel @ Missouri, Beilema @ Wisconsin and now Briles at Baylor actually don't have great classes usually in the 30 to 40 range yet they are still successful.

We can say this all we want, but in the grand scheme of things, the teams that land the big time recruits win the most. It's plain and simple.

Last I check Dan Mullens coaches at Mississippi State...didn't include recently retired Gary Pinkel...Back to Back SEC East Titles and classes were in the 40s...
Good coaching helps a bunch but those guys are recruiting the big boys and would take them if they could. They just don't get them so they go to the next best player.

Not really disagreeing...but just showing what coaching and development also counts...that Saban and Meyer at Ohio State they combine the best of both.

Good coaching can't make up what the Rams gave up to the Titans, this helps Titans to become a very good team and the Rams (not so much)JMHO.
