....Italy, tell me your thoughts, comments, recommendations, etc.

My Wife and I think we want to take a trip there for a couple of weeks. My biggest question is can I find a Fazoli’s there?

If serious...

Italy is awesome. Rome deserves a couple of days at least. Florence too. Perugia and Siena are good one day stops. Naples is a pit -avoid. Haven’t been to Venice or Milan. Amalfi coast is gorgeous.

All true. I could live there easily, particularly in Tuscany.

How long you got?

7: 3 in Rome & 2 each Flo & Venice
10: 4 in R, 2 in Siena or Assisi or Perugia
12: Add of another of S & A & P
14: Add Cinque Terra
17: Add Amalfi Coast: Pompeii/Sorrento/Capri/Amalfi/Positano
21: Milano & Lake Como
24: Verona & Padua
28: Go to Sicily

My Mom, aunt, and uncle all went in September. 10 day tour, but they stayed 14 to visit relatives. She's 83, and the hills got to her very quickly. So start walking to build up your stamina. She said the tour group picked them up early in the morning, and they didn't get back til late at night, so need endurance.

Venice is a must see...I’ve been all over the world and it’s one of a handful of places I want to visit again. Take the train over to the Swiss Alps. Duck into every little bar you see, but definitely go to Henry’s where Hemingway used to hang out. The atmosphere is incredible. If you’re a history buff, find a way to get to Rome

I've been to Italy three times and I have been all over the place. So many beautiful places that it's hard to name them all. I like the coastal towns that sit high upon the mountains overlooking the Med on the west side. Amalfi coast is absolutely beautiful, Positano, the Isle of Capri, and Tuscany. Venice is a very interesting place, at least for the first time. Extremely touristy and pricey! Rome is great for the history, but dirty. The Colosseum and the Vatican are a must, but long lines to get in. Pompeii is very interesting if you are a history buff like I am.

Get a car service. Best thing we did and they can take you to the best places. Easy to get around in Italy due to excellent train service....for the most part. Be aware of what you are charged when buying anything, food, clothes, etc. Inflated add ons are rampant. The laws in Italy are very lax and sometimes seems non-existent. Also, they ordinary citizens don't particularly like Americans. Look to be "bumped" into several times while walking the streets of Rome. After, the third time one day, I grabbed the guy. He just jerked away and went on.

I think everyone should go at least once, but certainly go for at least two weeks and travel around. It's hectic that way, but it's the only way to see as much of Italy as you can.

I would spend at the very least 3 days in Rome, but honestly more. It's my favorite place I have been to so far. And like it was said, you gotta see the Vatican while you're there (if your wife or any female is going there are restrictions on what to wear FYI). You will also probably want to get up early and see when certain things open so you don't have to wait as long.

Pisa is really cool and everything is within walking distance that's worth seeing.

Cinque Terre is beautiful if you want to spend a little time on the beach and see the Mediterranean.

If you do an Air BnB, you probably want to make sure they have A/C because a lot of places do not.

Florence is a place you want to see. I haven't been, but I have been told that Venice is just sort of a place you check off the list. You go there and go down the waterway and that's mostly it, but that's second-hand info. Others could probably give a better information on that.

Venice is the most spectacular city on the planet, just not really a city anymore as basically noone actually lives there.

you don't want to be there during peak season as it's overcrowded; you walk around the city like you may as well be leaving a stadium when the game just ended. it's that crowded

Have been numerous times with the wife. It is probably our favorite place in Europe because it has everything (good weather, great food, fantastic art/history/architecture, friendly people, English is spoken in the major cities and its a lot cheaper than England and France). The best tip that I can give you is to hire private guides to see major sites. This will save you hours of time waiting in line, know the best times to visit places of interest and get to see more. Also there is not much to see south of Naples so don't bother on your first trip.

I have been to Greece and Turkey but not Italy. Reading these comments makes me want to go.

I am putting this in my bucket for a must thing to do

Which did you enjoy more? Curious, because I’ve heard various opinions on both places.

Trieste is very very underrated. Probably my favorite place to visit in Italy rather than Rome. Was stationed in Naples and you can’t pay me to go back. Been to Venice 3 times and will probably take my wife just so she can check it off her bucket list. I want to go to Rimini before I get too damn old to enjoy it!

Been to Rome and loved it more than any other city I’ve been to in Europe. St Peters and the Vatican museum. The senate and coliseum. All must sees if you like history. Foods great. People are friendly. Lots of other great suggestions above. Enjoy.

Interesting to hear this. Haven't been. (Way) Off the beaten path. Hasn't really been Italian for a lot of its history. What about it that you like?

A city I forgot to mention and really enjoyed is Ravenna on east coast. The ancient (1000+ years) mosaic walls/ceilings in multiple churches & other buildings are spectacular imo. Easy to walk - flat, not that big. Spent 6-8 hours there. Wish I'd had another day. I haven't been, but the Ferrari Museums are nearby too.

Venice can be done in one day...anything longer and you are wasting your time.

Florence is unbelievable.

Rome is awesome - beautiful big city to walk or bike around in.
