This is more than enough reason to hate Misery....
Missouri players called us a bunch of Big 12 Pu@@ies..they will pay..Stole your spot? That's funny.
Stole your spot? That's funny.
They didn't "steal our spot". The SEC decided not to offer it to us. If you want to be angry at someone, be angry at the "powers that be" in the SEC.

Maybe a whisker better than "Appalachian State is HOT HOT HOT"
In the end...you're right. However, all Misery really wanted was to get out of the B12. They would have been much happier in the B10. That was their first choice.
For them, the SEC was their ticket out. They don't fit in there at all. Never will.
I went to the WVU/LSU game at Baton Rouge. It felt like being at our home field but on a larger scale. Great fans. Great venue. WVU deserved that spot and the SEC was our #1 choice.
In the end, the SEC deviated from their normal pattern of product drives performance ($). They chose TVs instead. Regrettable decision for the them and us.
I respect and understand your anger. As everyone knows, it came down to numbers. West Virginia has 1.85M people. The St. Louis metro area alone has almost 3 Million. That's not including Kansas City's 2.1M and then the rest of the state. TV sets rule. Plus, it's not like Mizzou hasn't been a consistent top 20 program for the last 15 years or so... It made sense.
Regarding your Big10 comment. Yes, that's where we wanted to go... initially. We knew there was some interest from that league. None of us heard anything about the SEC until after the Big10 stuff was in the past. And the entire fan base was thrilled, save a few old timers who were holding onto the kU rivalry.
To say that West Virginia fits any better than Mizzou is silly. I understand WV is rustic and country. What do you think Missouri is outside of our several large metro areas? It's damn country. And southern Missouri is as southern as Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
That said, WHEN the SEC expands again, I'd love to have you guys jump aboard. Unfortunately, I think your population numbers will always hurt you.
Look, I know the Mizzou/B10 thing is still a sore spot. There was a huge push to get in and they didn't want Mizzou, although they were a better fit and program than Maryland or Rutgers.
I've been to a few SEC games...here and away. We fit them like a glove. That's not insulting Mizzou. Mizzou doesn't fit.
Missouri has "several large metro areas." WV has none, just like I would argue Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama have none. IMO Louisiana and Tennessee have one each. Now SC, GA and FL obviously have more...but you get the point.
We had support to get in, but the SECN ruled the final decision. That doesn't make it the right one.
So, Mizzou doesn't fit just because the state of MO has several large metros? Ooookay. How about Florida? How about Georgia?
I'm not saying WV doesn't fit, but I am saying MO fits just fine.
Actually, MO ended up with the much better deal moving to the SEC versus the B1G. Nebraska had to join as a junior member and received much less revenue than its partners.
I'm absolutely saying that and I addressed that in my post as those states are the exception. California has lots of metro areas. If you put Cali further East, do you think that UCLA would blend in at an SEC mixer? No.
Now Missouri is not California, but it makes the point that the bulk of SEC fans and schools don't come from bigger cities. I guarantee you an Auburn tailgate looks way more like a WVU tailgate than a Missouri tailgate.
The demographics and academic profile of Mizzou are much more in step with the B10 than the SEC and frankly their football program is much more Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota than Auburn, Georgia and Florida. They had a couple good years in a fairly weak SEC East, but they are now much more in line with what they were in the B12.
I'm not sure I get your argument. Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Texas all have large urban population centers similar to Missouri.
If the SEC wanted WVU, they would have invited us. MIZZ might not fit in perfectly, but neither does WVU in the B12.

Some day this conference geographic insanity will end, and from the smoldering ashes will emerge a simpler and more natural system where the country is divided up into geographic boxes, and we'll be playing the teams nearby rather than traveling across multiple time zones week after week. The notion that WVU, Pitt, Maryland and Kentucky are in 4 different conferences is just insane. It's hard on the kids, and it's hard on the fans.
Until then, we just need to win.
