Former Kansas All-American Julian Wright called for Bill Self’s “early retirement” while assessing the state of the program in a lengthy Facebook post. Wright played for KU from 2005-07 as he became a first-round pick in the NBA Draft.

Wright said he called Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend, but didn’t get a response following Kansas “abysmal season” in 2024-25. The Jayhawks fell to Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, ending the year with a 21-13 overall record and an 11-9 mark in Big 12 play.

Wright called out Kansas’ “mid type of playbook,” which he said was “old,” as well. He also said he was willing to chip in for Self’s buyout, which currently sits at $23.1 million if he is fired without cause, according to the Kansas City Star.

Self just won a Natty a couple years ago. It feels like what we dealt with Calipari, but for way longer and none of the one seeds and titles. They are turning on him fast! It would be funny if he dipped and they didn’t sign a coach they thought they could. The options out there are kinda thin at the moment for guys who would move who make a difference. A couple that may are looking at pro options soon I’d think.

As much as I hate to say it, I have a feeling Self will get Kansas back on track. Dickinson was/is the issue. Guy is one of the biggest tools ever. Not sure why they don't just move on...bizarre.
Probably. Peterson is a monster and if they get decent pieces around him they should be good next year.

I can’t stand Dickinson but he wasn’t the coach who thought playing Hunter, Flory and KJ Adams together makes sense post-1988

The game is turning inside out from a 3/4 year player development to a 1/2 year gig. There definitely will be a larger than usual coaching change.

No coach will be safe.

The game is constantly evolving. Every long term coach deals with it and most can make the small changes to stay competitive, but eventually the changes become too radical for old school coaches to put the effort in.
Roy, K, Boeheim, Hamilton and many others, bowed out, they didn't want to deal with the BS.
Calipari is hanging on until the bitter end and now it's Self's turn to figure out how to adapt. He’s not the young pup anymore and the college game just went through a massive change.
So all those KU fans that shat on the BBN for "running Cal off" and talked about how he won a title in 2012, now have to deal with it, only Self won a title just 3 years ago. Who looks silly now?

I'm surprised Izzo is still around. Wouldn't surprise me if he bails soon.
I think last year may have reinvigorated him but he lost a lot from that team so I’m sure he won’t like trying to rebuild it yet again. I could see him leaving very soon.

He won the title, what, three years ago?
Yep. But that's a blue blood. Titles are important but so are deep tourney runs. And Self has a history of early exits.....like a former someone we know. But the last 2 seasons for Self have been very Cal-esque. (Number 1 Transfer, Number 1 returning player, etc, etc.)

No crying on the yacht. Adapt or die. And right now, he's not handling it well it seems.

I’m no fan of Kansas or Bill Self, but that article sounds like sour grapes to me. Self is still one of the very best coaches in the game. His record speaks for itself, I really don’t see how anyone can interpret it as anything less than stellar.

There in lies the rub. Had he not gotten that title I think he'd be out at KU right now. Dude has made to the second weekend ONCE in 7 years. Granted, that once was HUGE but, I can easily see why some chickens are getting a bit restless in Lawrence.

Without cause???!!! With all the crap that's happened at KU and they couldn't find a cause to fire Self!!!?? That's laughable!!!

He took some awful shots that were ill-timed, but the "pass" to Mayo sealed it for me. That was just blatant.

I have always said Bill Self is the ultimate feast or famine coach. He has a lot of early exits for Kansas, but then he also has doubled the number of NCAA Titles they have, and multiple Final-Fours.

thisssss....

However, Self made his bed by recruiting dickinson in the first place.
A lot of people on this board wanted him when he went to KU but I was not one of them. I was happy to see him go to Kansas to make their team chemistry implode just like he had Michigan.

Self has 50% of their titles. They won 2 in the 64 years of ncaa tourney era before he arrived.

He's won 2 in 22 years.

Kansas isn't some juggernaut when it comes to winning national titles.

When he took a shot at his relatives in Paducah like "We don't talk about them" Yeah. Dude was a douche. Karma came for him hard.
