That line prediction by Maggard is scary as hell. That would mean that every single player on the offensive line would be playing or learning a new position. We only lost 1 actual starter and yet he is suggesting that we change the line so much that we actually don't have a single returning starter (in terms of position). While I kind of like the idea of Toth playing guard and Jackson seeing some time at center, I really don't see how that could possibly be our best and most consistent lineup.
Personally, I think that Jackson is a solid recruit, but I would much rather see him redshirt and get experience on the scout team. He'd be having to block Elam on a regular basis on the scout team and he'll improve his technique and ability. He will be here for 4 years, most centers stick around all 4, so there is no reason to rush him onto the field.
Gotta agree with this! Lose 1 starter and jerk the whole O-line around? I can "understand" this in a year 1, maybe year 2 situation, but not year 4. As noted in your other post, "continuity and togetherness" has a bigger impact on OL play than anywhere else on the field.
There is a new offensive scheme going in this year but, based on my very limited viewing of Cincy last year, I don't think the offense, per se, will demand any wholesale OL personnel changes. But naturally, the OC is going to look for what he thinks are his best fits. We'll see come spring.
I have no problem with burning red shirts but you want get your money's worth. To me that means a legitimate 2 deep spot or a specialist position such as kick returner. However, O-line is a position where a very conservative approach to early play is advised. It is, IMO, the most difficult spot on the team for a t-FR to step in and be a meaningful contributor (they usually play because no one else on the roster is "better"). In general, playing as a t-FR more often means good play in the future but plenty of mistakes in the present. JMO.
