Red Grange at WWS is this Thursday-Friday. Website says 34 Teams are participating. Could not find a list of teams listed anywhere. Does anyone have a list of participating teams and/or schedule of games?

Looking forward to some high level competition. Feel free to post results and players/teams to watch here.

Someone get some footage of the LWE squads for me...
Mr. Bones, sir, I was wondering if you (or any other forum viewers) knew if video imaging of summertime 7-on-7 competitions is prohibited by IHSA rules or just by "coaching ethics?" Unless, of course, it is a practice that actually occurs. Thanks.

Clown Baby - what is the format? With 4 pools, I am guessing some teams are eliminated after day one while other advance. How does Red Grange work?

The format is they play round robin in the pools on Thursday to determine seeding for the Friday tournament. Friday I think teams are guaranteed two games and they do the lineman challenge. It is really an impressive event with competitive games and a fair amount of spectators for a 7 on 7.

Not sure if you can video the games yourself but I know they are usually online to watch.

To clarify, I was referring to videotaping an opponent from a school's season schedule at a public 7-on-7 to use as a scouting tool.

It would be frowned upon I'm sure plus it's 7on7 so.....not a lot of use I'm guessing

Respectfully, I will beg to differ on the "not a lot of use." Particularly for an early season opponent, a summer 7-on-7 look at their skill personnel, (for example an exceptionally tall receiver) could have bearing on a match-up for which to be prepared. In addition, as you see the formations, backfield sets/paths, pre-snap movements and route combos, or 2nd/3rd level alignments and coverages, guidance can be gained for the August practice prepartions for the first couple games on both sides of the ball. Just sayin' ...!

I don't see the benefit. The coverages are bland the blocking Schemes are non existent the blitz packages aren't installed and theirs no running game.

Other than that, yah very useful

All.... SHG has participated in several 7 on 7's. The really "fun" one is coming up in a couple weeks. The Southeastern (Turf Wars) 7 on 7 in Dalton Georgia. They have a web site .... P.S. I don't recall which one but the Cyclones and Broncos have already faced each other in a 7 on 7 this year. They weren't officially keeping score down on the field but some in the stands were. Ratsy

Nice showing by Aurora Christian today. They won their pool with a 4-1 record, their only loss being 18-14 to Maine South. AC allowed the fewest points against (36) and had the largest score differential (81) in the entire 34 team field.

I also believe they have the smallest school enrollment, also. Nice work, Eagles!

No surprise to us here at Montini. AC always is very tough and maybe the states best secret. Excellent program with the greatest fans!

Although Rochester going 3-2 they also really lit up the scoreboard a lot today. Their offense has been unstoppable for years now.

Fun day today at WWS. I was really impressed with Rochester today. They can really score points at will.

The best game was Maine South vs Rochester. MS was trailing and scored a TD to go up 28-24 with 6 seconds left in the game. Rochester ran a long out play to the sideline down to the 25-yard line with 3 seconds left in the game. MS put in the prevent defense lining up 5 defenders across the goal line. The Rochester QB rolled out to his left and through a low pass to the end zone and the Rochester receiver caught it with his knees on the ground in between two MS defenders to win on the last play of the game 30-28. MS fans were just shocked.

Hopefully next year we see SHG.

Always a good way to spend an afternoon, the tournament is run so well and there is always something going on to watch.

A good day for WWS winning the 7 on 7 and taking 3rd in the lineman challenge.

I know it's only 7 on 7's but does this change anybody's mind about DVC standings. WWS has struggle finding offense the last couple years maybe it's back? Not saying "state finals" back but "playoffs" back.

It doesn't change my opinion I've said before they will be decent this year and make the playoffs, I don't buy the people on this board have called them a "bottom tier" DVC team this year.

Post Tourney Thoughts...

First of all, congratulations to WWS for winning their tourney. That's pretty special. A well run, very organized tourney. My first time there - looking forward to going next year!

Not sure how selection of teams is done. Does anyone know? Of the 36 teams, 2 were from New York and only 2 teams were private schools (Montini and Aurora Christian). Mostly very large public schools from Chicago metro area with the exception of 4A Rochester and 3A Aurora Christian (both finished in Top 6) and 6A Montini.

Would have been nice to scratch the 2 NY schools. I can even see inviting some high caliber schools from neighboring Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan or Iowa. But New York?

Why only 2 private schools? Why isn't St. Francis there since they are from Wheaton? Why not Benet or Naz?

The field is open to any team that signs up, Montini enters every year and Rockford Boylan has been there in the past but outside of that the privates have just not shown up. It would be nice to see a Loyola or Providence play in it but they just haven't signed up.

You do realize not every team cares that much about 7on7?

It depends on how you look at it. All 7on7 tournaments count as contact days so a two day tournament can be harmful to your summer routine. Not everyone see the benefits (if any) of a 7 on 7 tournament. I will also add that having the tournament during the week keep ESL from attending. I think it is a great tournament.

Congrats to WWS on winning their tourney! Well done! These 7 on 7 events are fun to watch, and I think the kids enjoy going up against talent that they may not see until playoff time. As you assess the results, it's important to put things into perspective, especially QB play. In 7 on 7, the only pressure on the QB is the clock. The only way for the 7 on 7 to really mean anything, we need to see that QB play hold up under physical pressure, like a 300 pound lineman trying to bury him in the backfield. But, at least for now, you better put WWS on your watch list.

It's fun to watch the 7v7's and it is a key component of the offense and defense but yes there is no "pass rush" except the counting clock and QB doesn't have to worry about getting planted in the turf by a D lineman. Also - it doesn't really tell us much about a teams ability to run the ball or stop the run. Some teams are more run oriented and some more pass oriented. The "running teams" might not show as well at 7v7 tourneys but show up and look great in the fall.

That's pretty much how I see it, too. As a Glenbard West fan, I'm interested in how they might shape up in the passing game, to support their run-oriented offense. And DBs can always use some pre season challenges to prepare for the upcoming season.

Alot of the private (Catholic) schools also in most cases get out of school earlier and start summer camps earlier...so in several cases the whole tourney doesn't fit the schedule.....and I have no issues with the field it's always been strong

The "running teams" might not show as well at 7v7 tourneys but show up and look great in the fall.

The fact that there is no pass rush is countered by the fact that all of the receivers are covered by 7 defensive backs. Linebackers are 100% committed to covering receivers because there will be zero threat of the run. So while there is no pass rush to put pressure on the QB, there is additional/tighter coverage on receivers which makes for a more challenging throw/catch scenario.

No one is suggesting 7on7 is totally representative of a live game scenario. However, the benefits are unmistakable. Communication between QB and receivers and communication between defensive backs amongst themselves is huge. Attending multiple 7on7s over the summer allows units to develop true chemistry and get in synch with one another. Coaches get an opportunity to see which players step up (or don't) and make big plays (or not) at critical moments in a game. Good things to hammer out during the summer.

I also like what someone else suggested about getting the opportunity to face schools that you would never see during the regular season or playoffs. That's fun for everyone.

I don't disagree with you - yes 7/7 is a key component of both the offense and defense. But I also think too many people read too much into 7v7 success or failure translating directly into forecasting success or failure in the fall season.

Call me crazy - but I think more often than not - games are won and lost on controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Not always - but if I had to lay down a bet on every game played by every team during the season and I could 100 percent Forecast which team had the better overall o line and d line - I could make a lot of money over time (just like Vegas does in the casinos)!!
