I dropped the last 3 minutes of the game. The score was 77-43 when Roy Dixon entered the game. So minutes after that are disregarded.

Audige's phenomenal effort is borne out by his raw +39, but also his +10.2 adjustment, indicating that he was doing most of the good work.
28 points on 19 shots, with 5 steals, 3 assists and only 1 turnover.
The flipside of that is Boo Buie, who was +25 in 29 minutes of action, but his Player Adjust is -10.4, indicating that he was not playing well compared to the other guys on the court with him.
5 of 16 from the floor, with 5 turnovers, 1 steal and only 2 assists. A mediocre performance in a blowout win.

Of the specific combos, the Nicholson/Beran/Audige trio sparked a 35-15 advantage for NU over almost 19 minutes of action.
The Verhoeven/Barnhizer/Audige/Roper quartet played one stretch with Berry and one with Buie, totalling a 24-6 domination over only 7 minutes of play. Those were Audige's two best segments.

What a game by Chase. Obviously he made shots but he was just excellent all around the floor. 5 steals! And just one turnover. Good decisions with the ball, great defense. He was exceptional yesterday. If he can harness that we have an all-B1G player on our hands.

Yeah we got bad Boo yesterday. Thankfully the rest of the team was there to pick him up. If other guys are hot you don’t need to force it Boo. There will no doubt be days when we need you to though.

Anyways, great team win. Very crisp basketball. Good offensive execution and excellent team defense. Fun to watch.

PWB, as you know, I have questioned how these +/- stats are interpreted. I don’t quite follow the player adjustments. It seems odd that any player would have a minus after yesterdays game. I thought Berry and Beran played pretty well. Not the main reason for the blow out, but certainly didn’t come close to hurting us. The minuses feel like they are somewhat a victim of others success in the team. I realize you didn’t interpret the stats in this matter and just posted them.

I believe the little things get omitted. The screens, the tips, the hockey assist that often is more important that than the actual assist, and especially the Defensive stops. Being a plus 20+ player and having an individual minus rating seems flawed or incredibly lucky.

I know some are calling this “bad” Boo, but it didn’t feel that way to me. Yes, his stats were not close to what he can do, but he did exactly what many claim he rarely does, get out of the way! He wasn’t wild and didn’t have a “it’s my turn now” approach when others were rolling. I like to complain, but I can’t find much to complain about in that game.

At one point in the first half when I looked this was the breakdown:
Boo 1/8, 1/7 from 3
Rest of team 10/18, 5/7 from 3.

Taking 8 of the 26 shots when everyone else is hot doesn’t sound like “getting out of the way” to me. The turnovers too. He played and shot better in the second half. And hey we didn’t need him that much yday. I’m not a Boo hater, I realize he will single handedly win a couple games for us this year. But I don’t think he played well in the first half yday. Btw I do think he gave better defensive effort as the game went along - he was a contributor to our excellent team defense in the second half and really the whole game.

PS exhibit A on him single handedly winning a game for us was IPFW which we won 60-52 with 28 from Boo. He was 7-13 from 3 and the rest of the team was 2-14 (and only 14-38 total outside of Boo).

Fair enough, at the game, he felt a little more in control than usual. Maybe because I was letting it slide due to Chase being in fire.

I’m totally fine with him saving the makes for our future games when we need them more. That’s what we call senior leadership!

Last nights game, it really appeared to me that the Defense was so stifling that it got into DePaul's head. Maybe I'm just getting better at watching BB but there were so many forced errors and tie ups. So many times when DePaul players were just smothered. With out any real meltdowns DePaul looked really frustrated almost the entire second half. One of the commentators made the observation that DePaul was rushing shots because they didn't feel like they would be open long enough to take a better one. It looked that way to me too.
Hope they can win with Defense in the B1G too.

PPD, what I am trying to do is capture both the team aspect of each guy's performance AND the individual aspect. I added the player adjustment after I realized that people were right in pointing out the limitations of the +/- numbers "on their own."

So Buie was out there with Audige and the team was kicking ***, but it wasn't because of Buie, for the most part. I'd say he played "less well" than most of the guys he was teamed with, whereas Audige played "much better" than anyone he was teamed with.

Or you could say "we won that segment 8-5" but Buie didn't score and missed two shots, whereas Berry hit a 3 pointer, had an assist and a steal." Buie still gets credit for his share of the intangibles that went into outscoring the opponent 8-5, but his personal performance didnt elevate the result, in fact it detracted. Net -Net, he was still part of a winning effort.

Berry, Nicholson and Beran all played well - they were just overshadowed by Audige. And thats a good problem to have.

I completely agree with this.

But it needs the caveat that DePaul had absolutely no bigs. The height difference was very apparent. Makes it easier to close out on the perimeter.

Still, really great defensive effort. Feels like our guys are never giving up on trying to close out. Even when they are a step behind it feels the hustle to get back into position never stops.
