PSU RUN GAME FILM STUDY vs. AU

As always, see link. Delved into Penn State's philosophical switch from predominantly zone scheme rushing attack to an even mix of zone and gap scheme run this season...gap scheme concepts like DUO. We'll do a long DUO tutorial in the future because the assignments and responsibilities for the OL and the reads for the RB are totally different from zone. But I was curious if these second-level RB reads in gap schemes like DUO are easier for young RBs than the first-level DT or DE reads in inside and outside zone...so I asked him after he sent and he said "No, not really." Codutti said the move to things like DUO make for easier double teams for linemen to execute than double teams in zone. So it's tailored to aid the OL more than the young RBs.

soooooo. let me see if i understand your latin. DUO and other gap schemes put the first-level responsibilities predominantly on the OL and the second-level responsibilities predominantly on the RB, vice zone where both the OL and RB have first-level responsibilities?

Never played organized football, so when talking zone vs gap schemes, my head is swimming. I'll look forward to your DUO tutorial in the future.

I will say this about the running game so far. We don’t seem to lose yards. A 2-yard carry is not great, but it’s a hell of a lot better than a 2-yard loss (well, 4 yards to be exact). 2 straight 2-yard runs and you have a not too bad 3rd and 6 as opposed to a 2-yard loss and incomplete pass leading to a tough to manage 3rd and 12.

Good breakdown of film, really nice to see the Oline getting movement up front. This line continues to get better they could be pretty good by seasons end.

from one of the best. we dont use a FB instead we had an extra TE do his job but its the same.

That is a great film review...Gap blocking is the Wing T blocking rules..../ Gap...Down...On ..Backer...Etc.. Love It

Besides my earlier comment about the snaps from under center and tailback 7-8 yards deep you can also see a 'slight' difference in the pistol/sidecar set up. I dont know if it is intentional but I believe after watching many snaps the last week or so that SC and the RB and half a yard or so on their meshpoint from previous years. Not much, but 1-2 ft is can make a guy miss in the backfield or at the line.

Thanks Cali! So what to do attribute the changes in the run game to? Evolution of MY's offense? Personnel being better suited to this style? The opponents strengths/weaknesses?

as I mentioned in another thread, I believe that someone other than a QB is drawing up the blocking schemes. And of course putting the QB back under center certainly hasnt hurt.
