Watch out for Biggsville West Central in a couple of years...Their seventh grade track team just won the state title. Wait, let me rephrase that...Kaiden Droste, a seventh grader from Stronghurst West Central, just won the 7A state track team championship...He scored 40 points by himself to win the championship by winning the 100, 200, 400 and long jump...He set the 7A state record in the long jump, and was 0.01 off the 7A state record in the 100...

Seneca had a kid like this a few years ago...was top 3 in state in the 110 hurdles, shot put, and long jump in junior high...His problem...hard to run with the ball when you are getting hit 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage on every play because your line is not very good...and you are getting double team blocked on every play on defense...

And in 2A football news, the defending 2A champion Gibson City-Melvin Sibley will have an influx of young talent, as the GCMS boys ran away with the 8A state championship...Three stud athletes appear, as one doubled the 100 & 200 (8A State Record 200), one went 2nd 400 & 3rd long jump, and one went 4-5 in shot & discus...they also won 800 & 1600 relays...

Poor McNamara has to settle for their cross country future being bright, as Chase Provost doubled the 8A 800 & 1600...his little brother Christian was 18th in the 7A 800 & 9th in the 1600...

My guess is that the number represents the grade and A - and I assume AA and maybe more - identifies the class based on the size of the school.

Sorry, I assumed the title "Future" would make people realize I was mentioning Junior High / Middle School / whatever your local district calls it's 7-8 grade level building. Yes, those were 7A (small school 7th grade) & 8A (small school 8th grade) state results.

Some sports are just one class - wrestling is open to 5th thru 8th grade, all in one class, no 7th / 8th split. So a 5th grader who wins state beat 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to win state.

Baseball & softball are 7th & 8th grade combined teams, but into classes based on enrollment...

Track is split into Class A, schools up to 152 kids, and Class AA, over 152 kids - in 7th grade teams & 8th grade teams.

Boys basketball is split into 4 classes for each grade: Class A, up to 68 kids; Class AA, up to 128; 3A, up to 279; 4A, over 279.

IESA - junior high classes are so much smaller than high schools because there are so many consolidated school districts that kept their elementary schools separate from their high schools (i.e. Herscher now has two middle schools, and not too long ago had 4 junior highs). I find appropriate the junior high IESA schools that are 3A in basketball that feed into IHSA 2A basketball schools...why? They are in a unit district, with one junior high feeding the one high school. 100 kids per class = 200 kids junior high, a 3A IESA, while it results in a 400 kid high school (2A/3A football border, 2A Basketball). The other reason for small IESA schools is the private schools: for example, Kankakee County had like six Catholic elementary/junior highs not too long ago, but only McNamara for high school...

Middle school track results forecasting a future kick butt football team and track team?

Some of the dangers with that-
* some kids move
* some kids never grow another inch and get passed up by everyone else by junior year.
* some kids focus on one sport in HS and don’t come out for football or track (and end up doing baseball or soccer etc etc instead).

In many cases, you are correct. The 5'10" 6th graders who dominate in 6th & 7th grade basketball often can't adapt to only being 6' in high school...Perhaps the jokes above come true and the kid from Biggsville will move to Lombard to go to Montini...and some kids do focus on one sport.

But in a small school like Biggsville or GCMS, these kids are gods...the Biggsville 7th grader is a much bigger risk, as he might not grow anymore...The GCMS 8th graders in the fall can help reload the defending state champion football team, or do they choose to go to play soccer at Fisher in the co-op or run cross country (NOT)...The shot/discus kid likely starts both ways on the soph line, while the two sprinters likely start in the most important positions on the soph offense - whether it is RB, QB, or WR - and linebackers or safety on defense.

State champion track talent just doesn't show up at all small schools, and it will be used...And most 1A football sized schools that play baseball & run track have studs that play both...i.e. the stud sprinters will likely be shortstops & center fielders on days there aren't track meets, and the shot putter will play first base...Manteno, when I was in school, was 250 kids - and spring rosters had half of the baseball team also running track. Small schools still do that (but it's also why those schools rarely go far in the postseason, as the kids never get to practice - baseball games M-W-F, track Tu-Th).

Next year wrestling will be split into two classes. The cut line will be somewhere around 380 students I believe.
