I know several names have been thrown out - most of them ex-assistant coaches (including current HCs Wojo, Collins, Hurley and Dawkins). And, the Celtics Coach has also been thrown in the mix. Brad Stevens would be a quality choice, imo.

However, another that I think should be considered (depending on whether he leaves where he is now) and that is ...

Danny Hurley. He has done a fantastic job with Rhode Island.

Would not be my first choice neither but nobody wanted Coach K also. I anxious to see how Bobby Hurley does over the next few years at Az. St.

Capel gets the nod, but Collins would be my choice. Capel has been killing it on the recruits though.

And that's why Capel will be the next coach after K. It does two things:

1. It will allow a smooth transition with recruits once K retires.
2. Historically, Capel being the first African-American basketball coach (ever??? in any sport at Duke?? can someone check that) will be symbolic as well.

Also, let's not forget Capel built VCU and went to an Elite 8 at Oklahoma.

I said capel but I don't think it's a done deal.. at one time everyone said Dawkins. I think it's pretty clear Collins is better than Dawkins as was capel. Time will tell

Why does the next coach have to be someone within the Duke family? It seems like people only mention those with ties to Duke and that's pretty idiotic in my opinion. There will more than likely be options better than Hurley, Capel, or Collins when Coach K retires.

Go after the best coach when the time comes.

My choices before Capel

While all great coaches, you do realize that Miller and Few have never been to a final four? If people are scared of Capel in crunch time, what about Miller in crunch time? The guy has shown nothing when it counts.

I'm not totally disagreeing but Capel in crunch time is not the only reservation about him. I think he is a fine coach...just not sure he is the choice for the best college program on the planet. And I do mean the best. We should basically have a shot at just about anyone unless they are 100% not leaving their current job. If we are only going by who has gone super deep consistently - I don't think any of those guys leave - Self, Izzo, Wright, and even younger guys like Bennett are not likely to leave.

Agreed, it will be a tough choice with a lot of deserving coaches. But I have to agree with some other posters that said K is grooming Capel at the moment. I think we could all argue that Collins might be a better x's and o's coach than Capel but he cannot recruit like Capel.

And I think we can all agree that it's tough to win consistently without the best players.

That said, I don't think Duke goes outside the family with the next replacement, they have enough coaches to look at. UNC is the school that will have to go outside the family to find their next coach. Roy's coaching tree is a short bush.

I think it will be one of these.

Tommy Amacker
Johnny Dawkins
Bobby Hurley
Chris Collins
Wojo
Mike Brey
Shane Battier
Jon Scheyer
Nate James
Brad Stevens

And last but not least any number of the DI posters on this board. We have some great candidates here if the powers that be at Duke would just read the game time threads. :D OFC

Can't see Brey there....K and Brey arent exactly friends anymore, and if there was any chance Brey sealed his fate IMO w/his comment Farrell is better than Bobby Hurley....

So has Calipari, but the man panics in big moments. I'd hate to lose Capel, but I'm scared of him in crunch time.
This. And he got recruits aplenty at Oklahoma, recruiting is great don't get me wrong but I want a COACH and I just don't feel like Capel is that guy in that role. Know who I'd LOVE to see? Shane Battier.

How can anyone think the next coach will not be Capel? He's K's right hand man, K has given him a lot of freedom from what I've read, and the kids love him. IMO the job is Capels unless he doesn't want it.

At one point, and not too long ago, I was all for keeping it in the family. I am still not totally against it. With that being said, if Brad Stephens wants to come to Durham, you take him in a heartbeat.

Capel would be my next choice, mostly because of his recruiting prowess. I think Stephens, with the Duke brand, could recruit just as good and is the better coach. He would have the NBA experience card to sell too.

I agree Capel is being groomed for it and it's his...I however would take Brad Stevens and give him whatever it takes....

Yes wins were vacated but even though Capel wasn't implicated in the ordeal at Oklahoma does it give anyone else even mild concern that Capel was the head coach at OU during all of this...?

Brad Stephens isn't leaving the Celtics anytime soon and went on note saying it.

I think Collins is staying at Northwestern imo, I think he wants to write his own legacy and he's doing it so far.

Don't think you ever see Tommy Amaker as the head coach of Duke!

The next coach will be from the Duke/K family tree and I do see it being Capel.

Dawkins not producing at Stanford even after beating K for two recruits is a tale all sign and I would wait and see what Hurley does at ASU before throwing his name in there.
