All this it's capel including from me comes with the knowledge that Stevens didn't want it. I think they'll contact him first and if lightening struck they'd hire him, if not it's carols. If capel isn't up to it and Collins is still doing well he comes home IMO or we go after best available

Yes wins were vacated but even though Capel wasn't implicated in the ordeal at Oklahoma does it give anyone else even mild concern that Capel was the head coach at OU during all of this...?

It didn't give K any mild concern when he hired him

Why does the next coach have to be someone within the Duke family? It seems like people only mention those with ties to Duke and that's pretty idiotic in my opinion. There will more than likely be options better than Hurley, Capel, or Collins when Coach K retires.

good post. I remember what happened when Bubas retired and Waters became coach. Program went south. It is easier to recruit when the player knows he is going to be coached by the best of the best. I have a feeling it won't be that easy after K is gone.. Seldom does it work out really well when an asst. takes over from a legend. Get the best that can be had. Let the bashing begin.

You know it's funny. Collins was an assistant for K for MANY years. THIRTEEN to be exact. Was Ks top assistant. Goes off on his own and is building a program. Would be a shame for Collins not to be seriously considered.

Not a fan of Capel for the job. Great recruiter. Just not a great coach, imo.

Collins is a great choice - I just threw Hurley out there as a possibility.

But, if Collins builds Northwestern the way he wants to - making it another Duke - it will be hard to pry him away. In fact, if I were him and Northwestern does well, then I'd stay there and not put undue pressure on of following K to Duke.

If he keeps up the good work and his father is still here, I'd have to think he gets some consideration.

And if he were hired at Duke and things went south would his father fire him. Conflict of interest. OFC

No idea, but I don't think that stops him from being considered. Again, I think it will be Capel, but they might take a look.

Brad Stewart
Sean Miller
Mark Few

My choices before Capel

Brad Stevens right? He isn't leaving Boston.

Miller, meh. He's kinda the same as Capel. Great recruiter, hasn't won anything.

Few I could see, but highly doubt he leaves Gonzaga. Why would he? He's untouchable there, and expectations are soooo much lower. I'm sure he's had pretty good opportunities to move to a Power Conference before, and while I understand that none of those jobs was Duke...

It'll be Capel most likely, hopefully he can pick up more wisdom & Xs and Os from K over the next few years.

The only non-Duke coaching tree candidate I'd have any desire to see would be Gregg Marshall - dude can flat out coach, and I think he'd be pretty solid with better talent (similar to Brad Stevens)

Interesting stats on Capel:

Finished 1st or 2nd in his league 4 times
3 NCAA Appearances
One 30 win season
One Elite 8 at Oklahoma
Elite recruiter

I know Collins is the flavor of the month right now, but let's see him put up similar accolades.

One thing to think about. If Chris is really successful at N.W. who says he will want the Duke job. He may want to build his on long term program. Don't get me wrong. I think he would be a great coach at Duke. He's a good recruiter, has that competitive spirit that he inherited from his dad and enhanced it through Coach K. and doesn't take any crap and proved it when he got up in matt d's face when he wandered over to Duke's bench where he had no business being. He is well spoken and certainly can handle the press. We shall see in about 10 years who the next Duke coach is and until then we can speculate about 30 more times who's gonna follow Coach K. By then we may be talking about Marshall Plumlee as a candidate. OFC

I have always thought he would try to do 40 years at Duke and then hang them up, but with his health a little shaky I am wondering if he calls it quits next year after getting 1000 wins at Duke?

Collins or Wojo, whomever accomplishes more over next few years gets the nod.

Can't say I agree with this. However, before Capel came over I was a big proponent of CC taking the job. I do think it's Jeffs to turn down though, and I really wish our fans remember the past and don't judge his entire credibility on a few games, which has largely already happened.

Sometimes these coach in waiting situations don't go like everyone thought they would. VaTech in football - that job was Bud Foster's when Beamer stepped down. Yet, they fired a hot name young coach and Foster stayed on. I would LOVE for a similar thing to happen here - Stephens is hired and Capel stays on. Almost certainly won't happen - but that would be my preference by far.

Stevens has to be offered the job first. Crazy not to offer him first. From there, I offer Marshall. If they pass, I then go to the Duke guys.

I don't think there is a real question that it will be Capel. If he stays. The more colleges see his recruiting ability - the more other schools will go after him.

Pass Marshall but I agree with the other

I'd love to have Marshall on Duke's bench some day. Of course he would have to earn his C.T. ( coaching time ) I believe he can recruit and be a great big man coach and a 3 point shooting coach. Remember he never missed an attempted 3 pointer at Duke. He hit every one of his 3-point attempts. OFC

I would love to see the job go to Collins and Capel stay on as our top recruiter and top assistant coach but seriously doubt that will happen.

K aint going nowhere. He's too hard headed and wants career wins record. As long as Boheim sticks around old hard head will do the same. All about his legacy. Me Me Me.
