Are there many that jump down to Juco from D1 to begin with? I’d guess most of the time that happens due to academics. Shonn Greene for example back in the mid-late 2000s.
Shonn Greene and Clinton Solomon for football, Erek Hansen for basketball, Edwin Cooper for wrestling. It's happened more than one thinks when the coaching staff truly wants what is best for the athlete and the athlete really wants to be a part of the program.

If he leaves campus, I think it will be harder to get him back on campus. There are not many stories of kids that go DI, then have to go to a JUCO, then make the jump back to a DI program. Obviously, there's a chance it happens, but if he leaves campus, I don't think the chances of him coming back are very high.

And yea I must have missed why he's still wrestling with the team if he was 'dismissed' for not meeting the expectations of the program. Why was he dismissed if he's still wrestling with them?

As I mentioned, I'm pulling for him and love that he's a Hawk.

I agree in a sense but due to the rule change, it
might be a good way to save a year of eligibility while still making forward progress academically, and getting matches in to improve as well. Also, the motivation of NIL is still there.

I thought Cooper started Juco then went D1?

JUCOs today are quite different than they were 10, heck even 5 years ago. in many sports P4 schools are looking at jucos as basically finishers to high school - give kids a year or two to physically mature and then plug them directly into lineups. no more development, its transfers and win now. the stigma of great athletes just going to jucos to get their grades up isn't a thing anymore.

What is the rule change? I’ve seen people mention it but haven‘t seen any detail. It used to be that once you enroll in a D1 school, the 5 year clock starts (Pretty sure).

He was a Juco at Ellsworth CC, wrestling as a freshman and sitting out the second year. Then committed to Iowa for the 2013-14 year but got an assault charge that summer so was dismissed and went to Upper Iowa for the year Then he returned to Iowa with two years left. A completely different situation but still an example of being away a year and then given a second chance by the staff.

What did Montell Marion do? Can't remember exactly how that situation went down.

Billy Murphy is the best example I can think of a guy as hight level as Gabe who went JUCO and never came back. I don't think they had P4P back in 2006 but at the time he would have been top ten in his class. Hopefully we see Gabe in the black and gold again but I agree if he leaves campus, it's a much harder sell to bring him back.

More recent but not as highly ranked Jake Marlin left for JUCO and never came back.

Saw that the NCAA instituted a Mental Hardship Pilot Program. Gabe voiced that he was hospitalized due to mental challenges. Is this something he can take advantage of for this year? Use this year as a way to improve his mental health and seek the help from Therapist/doctors.

I know some will try to abuse this program but this is something that seems like it will legitimately help Gabe. Wishing him the best and if him and his support/family believe this is best for him, I hope he takes advantage of it.

Also, this will help him preserve his eligibility and work on himself.

Had he walked away on his own, sure you could probably apply that if it was legitimate. But he didn't leave the team willingly, he got kicked off (for now). Hopefully he does use the year to heal up physically and mentally as he so chooses, but he shouldn't be given a free hardship year for something he wouldn't be seeking if he was still on the team.

When is the first day of classes at Univ. of Iowa for the fall 2025 session? And is the list of enrolled students/student directory still publicly available?

If mental health is at the forefront of this process, essentially causing the problems, of course he should. That alone infers he wasn’t/isn’t in the best position to make the proper decisions, including staying on the team “willingly”.

I obviously don’t know the specifics, but only a small part of it actually needs to be true for him to be fully eligible for mental hardship or what’s the point of it to begin with…

I don’t think A 2 week hiatus due to mental illness justifies a red shirt, particularly when he came back and competed

I think the redshirt would be for the upcoming year. You're right that he can't get one for last year since he competed in the post-season.

Look, I am about as "anti-woke" as it gets. But, mental illness doesn't just last for 2 weeks. It can take years to even get close to getting your mind right, let alone ever.

Again, I did say that I don't know his situation. But, I do know that mental illness is not something to be taken lightly. It is an epidemic in this country. The more that can be done to identify it early on and implement ways to address it, I am 100% behind.

To me, it isn't remotely about gaming the system. As long as he would be getting the necessary treatment that almost certainly goes along with any mental hardship waiver, I don't see how that is anything but a good thing...

The below is an interesting read. WIth him missing this upcoming season, I can't see why he wouldn't qualify...

Only this "Car RamRod" douchebag would actually laugh at discussing mental health. If ever someone truly belonged in the original cesspool.......

The word "suspension" itself implies a temporary status. The right word should have been "indefinite" instead of permanent. Otherwise you should use words like removed or excluded. Saying "permanent suspension" is pretty much akin to "jumbo shrimp" or saying "same difference"......;)

He let himself slip and got up to 211 pounds. Has nothing to do with Iowa’s training staff.
Arnold isn't going 74 if Kennedy isn't going 65 if Caliendo isn't going 57. And I've heard nothing that that's a given. Gabe may just be on the outside looking in again.

Nice lineup if wrestlers are physically good there. I would say Ayala finalist, possible champ. I haven't looked but who beats Cali, somebody from that school out east probably. Wasn't that Williams guy going 49?

Do a side by side between Iowa and Iowa State!

Peterson - Poulin
Ayala - Frost
Bailey - Frost/Ech
Williams - Ech/Paniro
Voin/Estrada- Paniro/Zerban
Caliendo- Zerban/Euton
PK - Gaitan
Angelo - Dean
Endene - Elam
Kueter - Bastida

Iowa possible bonus at 65 and 74. Favs at 33 and 84 as well.

ISU heavy fav at 97. Fav at hwt and 57. Giving ISU the edge at 141, for now. My gut says Bailey's going to be really good at 141(top 5), but am ok with him needing to prove it before rising in the rankings.

25 and 49 close enough that I am calling them toss-ups.

Now put Echemendia at 41 and the bigger Frost at 49.
