Talented at what? Definitely not fighting. He was flat footed hands down and slow as AF. PRO fighters aren't 99.999999% of the planet... I see which group Steveson is on.

Very hard and, quite frankly, EXTREMELY lazy and biased to form that extreme of an opinion based on 10 seconds of a fight. Jon Jones wouldn't be touting him so hard if he didn't see the talent. The training, work ethic and pure tenacity are the issues. NOT, his abilities. An athlete with the wrestling acumen he has could absolutely wreak havoc in the UFC if he put the time in the very top dogs do.

Also, NOTHING you said changes the fact that nearly everyone, including the top UFC fighters get knocked the f out if they get hit the same way. The only difference is the top few have nearly all taken punches similar to that before and have tons of experience fighting that type of style. GABLE HAD NONE. There is a major learning curve and, again, it sure as hell won't be lack of talent that stops him if he doesn't succeed moving forward.

Gable stood above the rest and it makes me think he seemed like such a great athlete because of who he was being compared to. I could be wrong, but it makes me wonder.

Got you now and agree on most all points being made. HWT is deeper than ever, but still lacks the 'best' athletes for the most part.

Haselrig had a lot more football experience than Steveson did. Haselrig was originally a football player at Lock Haven before he got hurt and went to UPJ for wrestling.

Haselrig got hurt in preseason his freshman year and never played a down of football in college. Became an all pro without ever playing college. Not to mention being a multi time wrestling champion. That's generational talent, and while that is an overused term, in this case it is true.

Edit to add that this sort of proves the point that IF Haselrig had not gotten hurt, he likely would have played football and not wrestled. So the best talent goes to football unless that avenue is blocked for whatever reason.

Yes, I know he got hurt in preseason at LHU. My point still stands that Haselrig had a lot more football experience that Steveson. He had enough football experience to initially go to LHU for football. Steveson never played any organized football until he tried out for the Bills. It’s not just physical talent, it is knowledge and learned skills of the game. I always laugh when people refer to linemen as the unskilled position. Once you hit college and the pros, EVERY position requires a lot of skill to succeed.

Yeah, I’m just an armchair fan and have never boxed, but watching that fight it seemed like he got touched by the right hand, then put his nose at the ceiling to get away, and got tagged by the left on the chin. “keep your chin tucked.” It seems he needs a little more technique.

Gable is a btch. His biggest problem is his lack of work ethic/commitment.

No matter how athletic you are, you have to be willing to grind sht out - ESPECIALLY when doing something "new." His problem in WWE was that he literally refused to do the "work." When he was at the performance center, he straight up told the coaches he was not doing top rope work. He got cut because he was unwilling to do any of the nitty gritty hard work.

NFL? As athletic as he is, he refused to grind it out. Stephen Neal was on the practice squad for a year before he made the roster. It takes hours of dedication to be a professional at the level he assumes he's worthy of.

MMA? Jury is out. Hope he's willing to just put his head down and do the work.

He hasn’t weighed 205 since hs, probably. He’s a heavy weight.

He weighed in at 240 and looked soft AF. 35 lbs isn't unheard of in fighting. It takes a good team and the heart to do it. Gable hasn't shown that kind of desire since his sophomore year of college and Olympics.

No, I don't. You aren't going to waste your time on a guy if you actually know he has a glass chin or can't develop the necessary skills. There is always marketing that needs to be done. But, MMA isn't boxing. You don't make REAL money right away. You have to stay in the game for quite some time and build a brand by WINNING, or at least having very entertaining matches with someone that good. Steveson was set up to be a long term project. He absolutely still can be if he uses this as a motivational lesson....

As far as Rousey goes, she WAS a monster for a substantial amount of time. Sadly, the hype pushed her EGO to do some things she shouldn't have. Trying to go toe to toe with someone that is BETTER at it than you(and probably the only way she could lose), when your grappling/submissions game is 2nd to none was really stupid and inevitably broke her. The hype absolutely overwhelmed her. But, if she STUCK to what made her great, who knows how much longer she could have stayed on top...

Aaron Pico had a similar introduction to the UFC. The difference bring his striking ability from day one, imo.

Steveson came in 1-0 and was paid $160k for 12 seconds of work in this fight. His opponent got $30k base plus $30k for the win. Gable is a big name, but when Jones is hyping him like that, it doesn’t hurt his payday.

All that aside, what else is Jones gonna say? “He’s an awesome wrestler, but doesn’t have a lot of striking experience, so we’ll see how well he does?” Of course he’s going to pump up his guy.
