I wonder if they are considering a medical redshirt for him. The rule is, he has to be incapacitated and cannot play more than 30% of the team's games. NU will play 31 games (counting the tournament), and they round up, so he can (and has) play in 10 games max before he loses the year. If he has surgery on his shoulder (like Crawford did) he can redshirt this year and still have 2 years of eligibility left.

Don't forget: I believe CC said they have one game in the next 14 days. That's a lot of time to see what's happening with Gaines.

EDIT: CC from the Trib today, “I really admire him [Gaines] for playing through it because we are so young. It has gotten to the point where we needed to take a step back and get this thing treated and figured out. We’ll use the holiday to see — is this something that will be extended or something he can play through?”

Damn.

We'll miss him. CC gave a lot of his minutes to AJ, but I hope he can distribute them more to the underclassmen in preparation for next year. Of course foul trouble doesn't help the situation.

Don't really have any guards to take his guard minutes. Just Turner and Spencer. Now if one assumes 1/3 of his minutes are more forward oriented.... The young guys will have plenty of opportunity to develop

I don’t know how he feels about it, but I could have two more years of healthy Gaines starting with these guys next year.

I’d hate to watch him try to tough it out and just play mediocre ball while also in pain for the season. That would suck.

Plus getting the surgery now gives him longer to heal before next season

So Gaines would move into Nance's and Kopp's class.

And next year Audige would come in with three years of eligibility, along with the Ty Berry and Matt Nicholson (who may redshirt?).

NU could be unusually strong for three or four years running, regardless of whether or not the blue chippers come on board.

giving Gaines a healthy 2 years in Nance and Kopp’s class sounds good. He could be the Sanjay of the next tourney team. And he’d have a real shot at a tourney run maybe next year but hopefully the year after if we stay healthy.

If we lose Gaines this year, that really, really hurts. Losing our most experienced player and defensive stopper on such a young team is brutal.

Yes, it would be brutal. But the reality is with him healthy NU probably wouldn't win more than 4 or 5 B1G games. And if he is hurt what is the point of him playing, wasting a year and only winning 2 or 3 games?

Remember, this season is all about getting experience. Two years of a healthy Anthony >> 1 year healthy and 1 hurt.

Agree this year is purely developmental. I'd rather have him for 2 more years than graduating next year.

If there is a chance to redshirt him then they for sure should do it. This is a very much gone year, except for developing the freshmen and Nance. Gaines doesn't need to play. NU will end up finishing 13-14 in the B1G no matter if he plays or not. Good guy. Don't make him play hurt and negatively impact his future contribution.
In FB I sure as **** wished they would have redshirted Bowser before they blew that chance.

Was football unable to RS Bowser this year?

I'm not sure I agree with this. If he is hurt and just can't perform well, then yes, you sit him. Otherwise, I think its important that he plays, especially since this is a developmental year for the underclassmen. Having Gaines in the rotation makes this team better which helps the younger guys have the possibility for more success. It keeps them in roles that they are comfortable with and let's them see some success which is very important. If we go on to lose the rest of our games, I'm not sure how much that helps develop the young guys. They may be so beat down. But, if they get better as the year goes on and see that rewarded with some wins along the way, that bodes much better for next year and beyond. Losing Gaines really jeopardizes that as he is an emotional and physical leader out there when healthy.

The Gaines I have seen this year is much less effective than the AJ Turner I saw Saturday night. AJ deserves a starting job regardless of Anthony's status. He's a more complete basketball player right now. And Spencer certainly picked up the emotional leadership baton against DPU.
