Galax-45 GW-14 Final coaching ladies and gentlemen. Please don't take that as me saying Galax wasn't the better team cause they were. But coaching was the major difference.

I agree though. No dog in the fight, I have seen 2 Galax games this year, and the 2 GW games. Wytheville keeps athletes. You can see it flash a lot on the field. Galax was more prepared and way more discipline. Mark Dixon will out coach a lot of other coaches in the state but he has owned Harner. I seen comments on another board that stated that the RB did not like contact. that might be true because he made sure he wasn't touched all night.
Galax really struck gold with Mark Dixon because I remember Galax would only have a decent team every 3-4 years would have loved to see what he could have done with that team that had Brandon Brown, a huge fast Fullback years ago. I think its a Galax, Riverheads collision course because Narrows has rode an easy ride getting hit in the mouth may shock them like a couple of years ago when a freshmen had like 5 tds on them.

Last year was a shock at Galax. Complete demolition of Narrows. Two years ago, the freshman scored 4 times and Galax still eeked out of Narrows by a missed extra point after being down with less than 5 minutes to go. Let's get the narrative right here.

That's was a slug fest two years ago at Narrows. I don't won't to do that again.lol Outstanding atmosphere though.

Losing Dougie first play of round 1 of the playoffs was heart breaking and a huge loss. Dougie was an outstanding young man, on and off the field. He was as important on D as he was on O. It changed the whole complexity of Galaxs scheme.
Keaton Beaman stepped up huge in that game for us as Blake Brown was used heavily on D.

Having a weaker schedule is one thing but it isn't the end all to be all. Chilhowie didn't have a tough schedule at all last year and still handled everyone In the west.

ALOT of football left. (IF) we get far enough to play either Narrows or GW again, I am sure they will be ready.

Any given weekend when it comes to the likes of Narrows, Galax, GW, Chilhowie, PH, and maybe JI Burton. I'm looking forward to it. Just hoping everybody stays healthy all around. Narrows getting banged up just like everyone has and does.

Amen to that. Friday was the first time we haven't had two starters out per game all season. It is tough in single A when most schools have less than 30 kids.

I hate to hijack the thread, but what was up with the Narrows / Holston game? Something had to be amiss. Narrows was one of the toughest, quickest teams I’d seen in several years. I figured you’d be up by more than 4 points

GW had one of their top defensive players tear ACL in Gate City game and is out for the year . They really missed him Friday and another one of their players has a partial tear and played but was not near 100 percent . Not saying that they would have won if they were both 100 percent but it really hurt them on both sides of the ball . Galax is peaking at the right time .

Mix of things I think. Not sure coaching staff was entiely happy with their gameplan or it's execution. Dealing with injuries, one of which was a major one the week before at Giles. The kid was the leading tackler at MLB, another RB, and Punter. Missed him dearly at Punter all night and at MLB in the 2nd half when Holston hitched their wagon to Farris for the rest of the night. One of those nights where a lot of things came together and they just had to fight through it. Credit to them that they did.

In a 31 point defeat....only a GW fan would say the "major difference" is coaching.....LOLOLOLOL
It was definitely the major difference without question. Dixon used the same blitz almost every single play and it was never addressed. Galax used basically the same pass play the entire second half it was never addressed. Was Galax the better team yes no question about that. But was coaching 90% of why they were? Yes no question about that either. Why the hell did we spend 3 weeks practicing a double TE set to slow the blitz down and never use it? I've said it since his second year at GW he is a terrible HS football coach. He is a good dude outside of the game but he can't coach.

This is just par for the course.....

GW gets the doors blown off and it's the coach's fault. There is never any accountability. It can't be the player's fault....WE HAVE THE BEST ATHLETES IN THE STATE FOR 1A!!!!!!!!

GW's defensive line was scared. They were blown off the ball 80% of the snaps. Zero of their defensive lineman could make an athletic play to get off of a block and make a play. GW's defensive backs were lost. Zero fundamental stalking, I didn't see any great recovery speed, and their tackling in space is a joke. I watched the same game you did, the difference is, I didn't watch them through maroon colored lenses. I always make the drive to GW to watch them play once a year.....I always try to pick the most competitive game to come watch because I want to honestly assess the talent I always hear so much about. GW has some talent, but not to caliber that I hear about on here. GW was outplayed at just about every position....and definitely all the positions that matter. Galax will always be a nightmare matchup for GW. GW strength is usually speed and Dixon knows how to eliminate that.....cram the field. Who cares how much lateral speed you have when I am handing it off tackle 70% of the time. Galax is content with picking up their 4-6 yards a play and keeping the ball away from all those "athletes". This isn't because Dixon is a better coach, he just definitely knows how to neutralize a speed based team (usually GW).

We can have our differences of opinions, but let's address some real problems for GW on Friday night....their defensive line play was laughable and their DB's were absolutely lost. Those are GLARING issues when they play a formidable opponent. Hopefully they can get it figured out before the postseason.

What does the passing attack out of either team typically look like? Honest question because I haven’t seen too many 1A teams that can legitimately pass it 25-30 times a game. Hell, I haven’t seen many 2A teams that can do that effectively. There may be half dozen 2A and as many as a dozen 3A teams that have a legitimate passing game. A lot of people think they do but I just haven’t seen it myself. I am all for getting athletes in space but at the 1A level there just aren’t as many athletes on the dang field. Or am I just high or something?

I can't speak to what GW's passing attack looks like against sub-par opponents, but against Galax it was weak. It was slightly better than their abysmal rushing attack. Both QB's could improve drastically, but, Pickett's stats looked solid due to the fact that GW's pass defense is absolutely terrible. I think Pickett completed roughly 45% of his passes. He completed like 8-10 passes but he had huge gains to go along with them....from the abysmal GW pass defense.

I would bet that GW's main source of points/offensive production come from the passing unit due to the fact that their offensive line looked subpar in zone blocking schemes. Their QB looked to have some talent, but, he wasn't overwhelming by any means. Each team threw a pick. I wouldn't read to much into Galax's passing attack as when it comes to playing tough opponents their passing attack will stay around the 10 passes/per game mark. If I were game planning against GW, zone blitz them to death and by all means keep Simmons in the pocket.

@GatorBait1988, I appreciate your take on the two teams. I am not surprised with a 50% passing rate and 8-10 completions. The yardage would be a concern but if its mostly YAC then it may not be a huge deal against another team.

That's not to take away from either team but sometimes you run into a buzz saw and just cant get your bearing once BIG MO is against you. I look for both to finish without another loss and potentially meet again. That pesky Narrows team wants to get in on some of that action too though so we shall see.

I think a couple of things here. One GW is a good 1A team this year. One of the better QBs I had seen in a while. I would argue he was better than Cale from Chilhowie was last year. They have beat Auburn who just lost to Narrows by a score of 14-0 and Hung 50 on Grayson County. They also thumped Gate city 34-7, which is a team that beat Richlands. Now I know transient scores don't mean alot but just stating they have played and beat some decent teams.

Anytime you have a quarterback who leads the timesland and has threw for close to 1600 yards in 7 games at 64.8% completion rate is pretty dang good if you ask me. Pickett from Galax as well, he has threw for over a 1,100 yards and 20 plus TD's. Galax is averaging throwing the ball 20 plus times a game. Against the the toughest competition YTD Glenvar and Northside it was 23 to 27 times. So they are throwing quiet a bit actually. And I would argue that his yards are not all yards after the catch. Several Friday night and alot throughout the year have been 30 to 40 yard heaves that went on for TD's. I wish I could find yards through the air stats Redpride as you got me curious here. When you look at Johnsons stats he has caught one touchdown for every two balls thrown and most of his routes are deep routes.

The other point is about talent. It wasn't just about coaching Friday night, Galax has a ton of talent as well. People don't realize that, it gets covered up by how good a coach Mark is. Although I would say Galax had as much talent on the field as GW Friday night. So I don't think it can all be placed on the GW coaches shoulders.

GW has been faster than anybody they have played this year, until Friday. That is why the lateral plays, QB read options and screens that GW has been so successful with all year was not working. Galax has alot of team speed overall, and bottled it up or chased it down from the backside.

Coaching is a big part of the game, but sometimes you just come up against a team that out athletes you and out plays you. GW stacked the box and put their corners on an island all night .They was going to stop the run. Which in this case they was counting on their talent to be better than Galax. The problem with that is when you lose the one on one battles.

The O line still opened up the holes for running lanes, with a stacked box, and the wide receivers beat the coverage. I rewatched the film of Friday- 55 of Galax had 8 pancake blocks in the first quarter alone. Some of them 7 to 8 yards down field. The Dline for Galax was at the mess point for the QB all night and that caused havoc in the backfield. On two of Browns long runs the players was in position to make the plays, although he made multiple miss on his own and took to the house.

All of this is just my humble opinion if course, my wife tells me I am wrong all the time, sooo. Lol

I do think GW will be a force in the playoffs and if we play again they will be ready.

Finishing up watching this game and there are some things that I noticed.
1. Both lines have size but Galax appeared quicker and stronger
2. The defensive backfield for both are suspect period. Lots of missed tackles for GW and Galax is helped tremendously by the front 7 which are in the backfield all night.
3. Brown didn’t need to avoid contact because the GW tackling was not what I expect to see out of a Maroons team. Sorry to beat that drum again but dang, several of those plays are short yardage gains if someone just wraps up.
4. Neither team runs power. Both attempt to spread you to run. Late the backup for Galax was running inside but without a lead blocker so to me still not power.
5. Both are good football teams and if they were to meet again, I would expect a much better showing for GW but likely the same outcome overall.

It may have been an off night but if the two teams I witnessed play 10 times, Galax wins 8 times at least. Much love for my distant rooting interest in GW but there are some lessons to learn from this fellas.

I just finished watching the Galax/GW game on you tube. Speed team? If youre referring to GW they looked to have average speed to me. Matter of fact I wasnt overly impressed with either team. Really expected Galax to look better than what I saw. A lot of mistakes by both teams to be 7 games in.

To.me its hard to judge speed on film compared to live action and Galax never let them loose to show their speed. When i watched GW against gate city they looked fast to me. But thats just my opinion

I suppose speed is a relative term too guys. What looks fast one week against an over matched opponent is getting caught for a minimal gain against another team. I don't see either as fast as Chilhowie was at spots last year but it is harder to see from the booth perspective for me. To me there is nothing like standing at the fence field level to see the true speed.

Both teams made mistakes. To me no matter if it's week 2 or week 9 mistakes that shouldn't happen, happen. That's what you get when 15-17 year old kids are playing. I am sure it probably did seem off to you since you watch the red team every week and their well oiled machine. . But if you thought the RB on the first play from scrimmage wasn't fast, then the rest of the state is in a world of hurt. Because I thought the kid shot out of there like a rocket. Lol

@Triple Opt, he has good speed but my fat 48 year old butt could have gained 15-20 on that play. There was no LB or S within shouting distant at the snap. Horrible D against a very good O. Both LB’s got sucked up but the A gap was wide enough for a truck to fit through. The run that he had down the sideline was more impressive to me because he made people miss and pulled away from the closest defender. Solid performer in my eyes but don’t point the first play out as the signature because that was line play and poor defense as much as him in my opinion.

As for mistakes, truthfully there were several in a Galax and many many more on GW. I will point out that the Peoples kid stands out on D. Solid at the nose with above average strength for HS.

I know this wasn’t directed to me but I had to call out the run play you mentioned brother. Trust me I love plays like that too but it wasn’t the showcase play I would pick if this was the only tape I had of him.

No problem, I wasn't speaking as to the size of hole, you are correct the team bus could have driven through it. I was speaking specifically as to how fast he shot out of there. He covered 40 yards In a blink of the eye.

GW problem is they play that 4-4 with no deep safety so Dixon knew this and ran skinny post all game and killed them. if they meet again im sure GW will not change anything once again get pounded by the pass. Their coach sticks with a 4-4 no matter what. its the same crappy D Va Tech runs. Dixon just out coaches him every time.

GW coach will not change anything on D! it will be the same 4-4 with no safety and galax will blow them out again. I wonder if he never changes D is because he doesn't know any other D
