Gas prices KY

Looking at gasbuddy.com map of gas prices, why is KY so much higher than Tennessee to our south, and then also higher, specifically for Lou-Lex-NKY, than anywhere in Ohio to our north?

And why has it surged just this week? Gas stations in NKY, for example, were $2.14 on Sunday night and the same ones were $2.45 yesterday early afternoon. What gives?

Yep, it's amazing how that imaginary line between the two states creates such a difference in price. Then you keep heading north and the price goes up and up....until you hit Ohio...then it goes down again, amazingly.

I paid 2.13 yesterday in a town in the same county 25 miles away. Pay 2.39 where I live. 12 miles between it is 2.55. Crazy.

I know in August the BP refinery that serves all of Indiana that portion of KY was shut down, which kept prices high when the rest of the nation dropped below $2.00. Now that refinery is back on line though. My guess is the producers are charging high because they can still get it.

I have two good friends who are in the wholesale gas distribution business and I've asked both of them that question what seems like a million times and never received what I thought was a definitive answer. That said...the best answer that can be given is simply...competition. Most stations will set their prices to be competitive with the other stations in the area. I buy a lot of gas at Costco and have talked to the person who manages their gas business. Their directive is to be the lowest or equal to the lowest gas in a 5 mile radius of their store.
The problem you run into in a lot of areas is that a very small number of people own all of the retail outlets therefore they can pretty much control the pricing.

On a somewhat related note, another good friend of mine own a Honda dealership and he says that the constant fluctuation of gas prices is playing havoc on auto manufacturers. His oldest inventory in stock are two hybrids which when gas was $4/gal were selling like hotcakes. Now they can't give them away.

I hope everybody realizes that the Saudis are setting us up for a major f#@king. They are trying to drive all of the higher production cost producers out of the business so that they can then turn around and drive the price of oil back through the roof. Enjoy the "cheap gas" for now cuz the f'kn is coming down the road.

Everyone should instal solar panels and drive electric cars anyway. No excuse to still be using gas/oil in 2015. Wait nevermind
