I thought they played well… things to improve on obviously but for a first game with all new dudes I was good with it. Especially as the game went on…

Reading some of the game threads and all I saw was unwarranted griping about that group

Thru 3 quarters the OL was getting beat badly. The missed assignments were blatant and they were swimming.

Holgorsen was getting AC out of the pocket on designed rollouts because the D was getting the push. It's only Game 1 but they need to show serious improvement or AC will be in the hospital.

Who the hell was blocking when we gave up that sack in the second quarter? We schemed up a one on one with a receiver or tight end blocking their defensive end?

He was winning at the los, from what I could see. Anyways, I think our offense will be improved. I think our secondary took a step back and our d line hasn't improved.
Straight run plays yes. Pass pro not so much. Thought he was the weakest performer but you would have to watch video and isolate on him.

Thankfully Dana has a QB that makes it so he can play call around the problem

Yeah secondary wasn't as good. Partly due to a year long problem I think. We are gonna struggle to get pass rush.

I actually think our CBs did good when matched up in man. But they struggled in zone I thought. At least to the naked first view eye.

I know he had an interception but I swear number 13 looked a lot like number 21 from last year. Again I'm not seeing it.

Agreed for most part, but we were in loose man - which can look like zone- for a good number of snaps- thats a coaches decision so they could bring pressure while not giving up the big play. We got zero pressure rushing 4

We got to see some of Geeps favorite scheme- counter. Both off of jet look and an off tackle fake with wham blocking. Both were set up with the base play pretty well. Even did a play action toss off the counter action fake. Look to see more of those as the season progresses . Series football works. One of the bright spots

oh ok. Like I said it was a loose first view. At the South Carolina game tailgating so I was Manning the grill and kinda watching at the same time. When I get home tomorrow I'll give a second over. But that definitely could be the case. Can't wait to zone in on the defense. Especially the front ...

Disagree about the pressure with 4 .

Thats why the QB had to scramble and leave the pocket.

Not consistent but they got pressure with 4.

Good Pressure was almost always with 5 and even 6 a couple of times.
Their QB scrambled a bit because there were some nice lanes open early with 4 rushing. Even looked like they ran some man free with a spy on the qb after he made a few nice runs. We even spied the qb with a down lineman at least one snap- you don’t see that very often. It worked on that snap- didn’t see it again/ glad to see the d mix it up

First run from scrimmage my eyes were glued on the OL. I thought "....Been a while since I've seen that...." Nice. OL is improved.

There were some pass-pro issues later. Hopefully they clean it up, but I am grateful Uncle Don is gone and Geep is here. I think they're going to be solid.

I agree with everything you wrote. Safety is a major concern for me. DL - I will say the jury is out because my expectations were so low, they sort of out-performed those expectations, but still not great.

Chambliss should change everything for us at LB

Gotta go back and watch the LB play. Foster showed a bit early but nothing too major. V9 I'm not sure.

I will say the McDougle kid looked like a pretty solid tackler. But man 13 just always seems a step slow. Crazy thing is when he got the interception he took off. His wheels looked very good. Above average for a safety id say.

I'll tell you what though Conn really impressed me. That dude brings it. Also has great instincts.

Stoudmire was eating double teams every time I watched him. Dude looked good. He was getting push.

Left too many open run lanes it seemed. Backers I think were dropping in coverage leaving running room. That’s probably my biggest concern defensively other than them being able to isolate Guthrie one on one with a WR.

Blown line call according to either Moore or Sirles in the postgame. Nelson wasn’t supposed to be one on one with that guy.
If I recall correctly, Nelson was lined up as an inline TE on that play. There's not any world where the 10 people involved in those decisions plus the personnel director, Assistant to the head coach Snow and so on should decide that (A) Carter Nelson is an inline TE and (B) we're going to have Carter stay in to pass block. I mean WTF.

Blown line call? Sure, maybe. Maybe not. But why is he there in the first place? It's like they've given up on using Carter as a weapon and are just trying to get him snaps at this point.

There was a lot of “let’s see what they can do” going on yesterday IMO but he’s clearly not a great inline blocker. Hopefully they take note of that now. One thing I loved was how when called on other OGs and OTs subbed in and did well. Knaack was in the game on Colandrea’s zone read TD run. Tree covered for Gottula when he cramped. We have some depth. Black really pissed me off though. When Colandrea got pressure it seemed like it usually came from Black’s guy. Could be the 2 false starts were clouding my view😡

I'm not worried about Black or that guard spot. Black is a proven vet. This was his first game away from Ames. Some guys get nervous. He'll settle in. I will say that Black all along was viewed as a very large run blocker. That's why he's here. Pass blocking wasn't his forte. I think they will figure it out.

Only thing I was disappointed in was we pressured the QB but very seldom till late in the game did we have any sacks.

Most of the defense scheme looked a little vanilla.

Does any one know how long Chambliss is out for? Like to see him back by the North Dakota game.

Other than their quarterback scrambles we gave up 69 yards rushing by their running backs. I wouldn’t say our defensive line isn’t improving.

You can’t ignore QB scrambles when analyzing the D line. Just as in the normal run game some of that falls on the backers but on a lot of those scrambles his O line was holding their own locked up man on man with our D line. I don’t know sh## about coaching D but something needs to change with how we’re scheming things up. I was happy to see us bringing more guys at him in the second half.

JMO, I guess we'll have to wait until B1G play to make any definitive proclamations. There were holes, but Ohio wasn't athletic enough to take advantage.
