The last and only time Geneseo played Montini was in 1982 in the class 4A state semi-final game. They once again will meet in the semi-finals, only this time the game will not be in Geneseo but rather Montini (where no cannon's are going off after each home touchdown).

The 1982 Montini team played at Lisle and Rich Central to get to the semi-finals. This was the first Montini team to make it as far as the State Semi-Finals. The winner of the Geneseo/Montini back then would have to play a team named Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin.

Here is an article in the Chicago Tribune talking about that upcoming 1982 semi-final game. As you may notice the Head Coach was the same, Coach Chris Andriano. The ’82 teams most notable player was a Westerkamp who played wide receiver. No, it was not Jordan Westerkamp, but the father Bob Westerkamp. He had a playoff record 5 interceptions to help the Bronco’s defeat Rich Central and to get to the Geneseo game.

Both Geneseo and Montini programs have won 5 state championships. Geneseo has 10 state championship game appearances and 15 state semi-final appearances. Their history also includes a 52-game unbeaten streak. In the ’82 game against Montini & Geneseo, Montini scored first early in the game on a long pass from QB John Karpowicz to the state’s co-player of the year, wide receiver Bob Westerkamp (the other player of the year was OPRF’s Eric Kumerow). After Montini went up 7-0 early in the first quarter it was all Geneseo after that.

Here is the Tribune article talking about the game in 1982 which ended Montini’s state title game hopes. A couple of quotes from that game….

"That is definitely the best high school football team I ever seen" -Montini Head Coach Chris Andriano

"We knew that they would be good, we just did not expect them to be this physical" -Montini QB John Karpowicz

Hopefully the 2014 game will be different and our current Bronco’s can get into another state championship game!

---------------------------------------

From looking at old articles about the ’82 team below are some of the team members by position. If you know any other members of that team, please list them. I don’t have a copy of an old roster.

Re: Geneseo @ Montini (32-Year Anniversary Game)

Looking forward to this one. I was a future alum at the time this game took place, but a huge fan. The loss was a crushing blow.

Geneseo folks, we look forward to hosting in Lombard next week. We do not have a cannon, in case you were wondering.

Re: Geneseo @ Montini (32-Year Anniversary Game)

The visitors seating is the best in the house! You won't get seating anywhere in the state as close to the field. It's about 5-6 rows deep but very long, extends to about both 25-yard lines. We always had enough room in the house.

No cannons allowed in the house.

I will give all the Geneseo fans and administration the same warm hospitality given to me and my family and friends 32 years ago.

I used to live and work in Lombard in the mid to late 80's. Haven't been back there in a very long time. It will be great and loads of fun to return for this game. Very much looking forward to it.......should be a great match-up and game for all! Go Green Machine!

Old Leaf please stop in Ladd at Rip's tavern and bring a carload of their unbelievable fried chicken for us to sell at the concession stand. I have been there twice. Once in 82 and once 2years ago. That is the only fried chicken i have ever eaten. Walked in 32 years ago and I said do you have a menu? "no" ok what do you have? "chicken and more chicken" Ok I'll take the chicken then hahahahahaha best stuff ever.

Marmalum.......since you don't make it out west much to rural Illinois, the Geneseo Caravan can easily stop at Rip's Tavern and pick up a load of chicken on our way to Lombard. But since this doesn't happen very often, we might as well bring a live hog along with us and butcher it at the tailgate to also have a fresh hog roast. It's so much better fresh.......Montini and the local Lombardians won't mind, will they? Just bringing some western rural Illinois culture and generosity. There will be plenty for all and we like to share.
