The last and only time Geneseo played Montini was in 1982 in the class 4A state semi-final game. They once again will meet in the semi-finals, only this time the game will not be in Geneseo but rather Montini (where no cannon's are going off after each home touchdown).
The 1982 Montini team played at Lisle and Rich Central to get to the semi-finals. This was the first Montini team to make it as far as the State Semi-Finals. The winner of the Geneseo/Montini back then would have to play a team named Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin.
Here is an article in the Chicago Tribune talking about that upcoming 1982 semi-final game. As you may notice the Head Coach was the same, Coach Chris Andriano. The ’82 teams most notable player was a Westerkamp who played wide receiver. No, it was not Jordan Westerkamp, but the father Bob Westerkamp. He had a playoff record 5 interceptions to help the Bronco’s defeat Rich Central and to get to the Geneseo game.
Both Geneseo and Montini programs have won 5 state championships. Geneseo has 10 state championship game appearances and 15 state semi-final appearances. Their history also includes a 52-game unbeaten streak. In the ’82 game against Montini & Geneseo, Montini scored first early in the game on a long pass from QB John Karpowicz to the state’s co-player of the year, wide receiver Bob Westerkamp (the other player of the year was OPRF’s Eric Kumerow). After Montini went up 7-0 early in the first quarter it was all Geneseo after that.
Here is the Tribune article talking about the game in 1982 which ended Montini’s state title game hopes. A couple of quotes from that game….
"That is definitely the best high school football team I ever seen" -Montini Head Coach Chris Andriano
"We knew that they would be good, we just did not expect them to be this physical" -Montini QB John Karpowicz
Hopefully the 2014 game will be different and our current Bronco’s can get into another state championship game!
