He transformed from one of the most disliked athletes to one of the most affable sports figures. He seemed to be plain mean until the loss to Ali (still surprised that happened). He stayed out of boxing for a while and then became a gracious competitor with frightening punching power even as an old boxer. Incredible athlete and incredible human being who showed we all can change for the better.

He transformed from one of the most disliked athletes...
He was never one of the most disliked athletes. He's been one of the favorites since the 1968 Olympics. While the track stars stood with fists in the air, Foreman was running around the boxing ring waving an American flag. I've never known anyone who disliked George Foreman.

He did receive adoration from the Olympics and after he beat Joe Frazier the first time but there was a period of time - I think it was after the Ali fight-where he was not well liked. The crowds were hostile toward him (he fought 5 people in an exhibition and he didn't receive much love). Admittedly the Jimmy Young fight is from memory but he wasn't the crowd favorite that night. When he started the comeback though he was well received as a crowd favorite.

I was going through some of the yahoo articles, some great photos! Man, his smile was something, as well as his build, he was a stud!

In today's world, passing at 76 seems kinda young. I always liked him. Would have hated to be in the opposite corner facing him. My eyes would have been as big as saucers and would have been prepping legs for 10 round runs. There is no way he could have caught me.
