Exactly.
The thread title is a little misleading.
Why should UK specifically need to get to know Brayden Smith.
You could start the same thread with 100 different players.
Guess it just shows how hungry UK fans are for some positive recruiting news.
The the thread title clearly said “could” be the next pg. There’s not a definitive implication there.

Sounds like another wheeler maybe with a better shot. We need guys who can defend mark. Bbn likes points but wins are where it’s at. Gotta be able to win in the 60s or 70s if we have to.
I think you sacrifice rebounding, defense and scoring at the rim when you have short guards. I just think there will he much better options out there.

“Much better” than the POTY of the 2nd best conference this year?
Better, maybe. Much better, probably not, else would be 1st round draft pick this summer instead of transferring.

I get that he was quicker, but Ulis was much shorter. There have been several short (<6’3) Final 4 PGs the last 5-10 years, including himself (Smith) and Sears from last year.

Yep you guys loved wheeler until about half way through his first season. Most of you thought he was the best transfer we pulled. Then the defense. If this guy can’t defend it’s going to be difficult. I haven’t seen him play I just read that article and I got a wheeler feel from it. But I remember you loved wheeler even when his short comings were evident
I loved 5’8 Ulis.
SEC POTY and DPOTY, and 1st team AA.

Ulis played for Cal, Pope runs a completely different system where our guys are spread out. Our guards need to be able to finish at the rim over length, after cutting to the basket and they need to rebound in space, a 6' guard is going to struggle to do those things.

Braden is a great system guy and I think he is a nice weapon, I just wish he was a few inches taller.

Sorry but you are wrong. Stats show B.Smith is a better rebounder than every UK player shorter than 6’9 except Oweh and Noah. That is after taking into account more minutes (so looking at per30min stats). Better than Butler and 6’7 Brea and 6’6 Robinson and 6’7 Almonor.

How can my opinion be wrong?

Sorry, but if you think a 6' guard is going to have a rebounding advantage over a 6'5" guard, I have oceanfront property for you to buy in Nebraska.

Also, finishing at the rim over length, is not something you see most 6' guards doing.

Like I said at the end of my post, I just wish he was a few inches taller.

Sears is 6’1 and not super athletic and finishes at the rim a lot. Also IMO you are way overemphasizing the importance of that one aspect of the game. Ulis finished at the rim. Smart undersized players figure out how to do that.

I said you were wrong about rebounding, because that is easily measurable, and the stats prove you are wrong!
Smith averaged 4.6reb in 35.9min, which is 3.84 reb per30 min.
6’7 Brea = 3.49 reb per30 min
6’6 Robinson = 3.75
6’7 PF Almonor = 3.47
6’2 Butler = 3.29
Should those taller guys rebound better than him? Yes. Probably he just wants it more, or blocks out better.

Well, if he comes here, I will definitely support him, I was just hoping for a guy with size, length and a couple years of eligibility.
I find it odd that he would leave Purdue after 3 years with Painter.

You still on this too small kick? Sean Pedulla is 6’1 was the leading scorer for Ole Miss. 15 ppg

Sears seemed pretty athletic to me. Most everyone had trouble stopping him

$$$ would probably be why

Hey, I hope we can get better, I’d love the best 10 players in the country on our team next year. But not happening. I think B.Smith would be one of the top 3 PG in the portal if he enters it. Can’t complain about top 3 at any position.

I believe Pope knows that... but when you only had a month or so to build out a brand new roster you take what you can get.

All things considered this year has been hugely successful for Year 1.
Exactly right. And if not for the injuries, UK would be a top 10 team in the country. UK was very unfortunate with who got injured. Basically all of the PGs and the only true PF on the team.

Also, it's not like he's going to be our only pg, I'm not up to par on our incoming recruits, but I believe we have one that has some length iirc.

Don’t waste your time on that. This dude is adamant Braden Smith, Big 10 POY is not SEC material. I’m beginning to think Braden banged this dude’s old lady.
That's not what I'm saying. I said I preferred a guy that had more size and length, but you need a story to tell.

How exactly is it misleading? It says “could”. Seems pretty clear to me if you speak fluent english.

It shouldn't be this complicated for you. The simple existence of this thread on this site suggests there any reason whatsoever to think this guy a) leaves Purdue and b) we have a chance to land him. It's right there in the first post. I read all 7 pages and still don't know why we're discussing this guy. You COULD name absolutely anyone with eligibility next year and do the exact same thread for every one of them. Surely you can see why that's a complete waste of time.

Braden Smith is a superstar. He was the best PG in CBB this year. He would be the best player in the portal.
Agreed. There is reason he is a semi-finalist for the Naismith Trophy. If he ends up wearing Kentucky across his chest we will be good to go at PG.

I watched some highlights of him, and at first look, he reminds me of a better version of Patrick Sparks.

Not just because he's white...

He has a similar build, similar quickness and athletic ability, and skillset.

He'll definitely struggle defensively against long, quick and athletic guards in the SEC, but he'll give opposing guards fits too.
