If anyone’s interested:

Michaux State Forest allows free camping (20 min from battlefield). Campfires allowed. Site #14 is perfect.

The battlefield is incredible! Can’t believe I’m just now seeing it for the first time.

great place to visit. I like to ride bikes through the battlefield - much easier to get around. Balderderry Inn is a great B&B.

A confederate re-enacter was downing WV at the Virginia monument. “West Virginia is constitutionally illegitimate, because no one went to Richmond to vote on whether they could break off”, he said. I walked past....tipped my WV hat and said: “yeah and there’s plenty of people on the mountains still happy about that today!”.

I felt proud.

You sure can. Tours of the battlefield, tours of the town as there is ton of history throughout, ate at two excellent bar/restaurants in town that was also historic, Dwight Eisenhower museum, civil war museum, and maybe a few other things visited. Stayed at a hotel in the middle of downtown. Very enjoyable 3 night weekend.

Excellent post.

Yeah, I didn’t even know about Eisenhower’s farm. That was really awesome. Makes me like him on a whole higher level

Sure have reminded him that that pesky succession that VA pulled is what allowed it.

I worked on a powerhouse '99 2001 in Gettysburg & my work partner was a big civil war buff , he took me all over Gettysburg & a 30 mile radius & gave the best history classes. So much fun & every little town has so much history ....& good little old town taverns to drink in ...i truly love my job

You’re pretty close to Antietam, if you have time it’s worth going to see as well. More spread than Gettysburg I think, but still worth the drive.

Gettysburg/Adam's County is where I made a post about last year, as a great place to retire. Cooper made fun of me though, so I walked away from the thread.

Dobbins House is a great place for lunch and a beer or two, and their famous onion soup is simply killer.

As for biking, we biked through Antietam which is kind of tough, but passed on Gettysburg due to all the hills, and took the tour bus instead.
