Since we don't have a separate board for bball I am going to create some threads for hoops. Season starts next week for many, and teams have been scrimmaging already.

Most of my focus is on WNC teams but feel free to post about other areas here too.

For WNC some teams to watch are-

I know teams like Freedom, Mcdowell and Hickory usually are pretty good. Watauga was a force last year. Does anyone know what Watauga brings back this year.

Stuart Cramer will be pretty solid again this year. O'Shauna Holland is back and that says enough. They will have to replace the other guard. Lost Womack to graduation and her thought to be replacement is a current JR. that got plenty of reps last season but decided to not play this year. They do return a 6'2" center as well.

I’m taking a wait and see approach with the Lady Patriots this year. They’ve got some ballers, but they relied too much on Payton Caldwell last year and she’s playing for Mars Hill now. Someone is going to have to step up into her role.

I was going to challenge this but I went over to MaxPreps to look at South Caldwell’s roster and Ava Anderson, who lit the conference up last year as a freshman, isn’t on their roster.
She’s a baller and the Spartans would be a real threat with her, so I’m curious about why she isn’t listed on that team.

Oak Grove beat N Wilkes for the Mary Garber Championship 48-41. Sad that WSFCS don’t have a better showing each year when it’s primarily for those schools.

McDowell has a big game Wednesday night against a good Mallard Creek girls team which already owns a win over Marvin Ridge- a team that went pretty far in the playoffs last season.

McDowell rolled RS Central 58-19.

Undefeated teams clash tomorrow as a really good Mallard Creek team comes to Marion.

Freedom 49-41 over East Burke. Nice to get a win over the Lady Cavs, but the Brinkley girl didn’t play for them and I think she’s their best player. Freedom had leads of as many as 12, but East Burke cut it to two late before the Lady Pats finally put it away. They really need to cut down on turnovers and make better decisions.

McDowell down 23-14 at the half to Mallard Creek. They are having a lot of issues against the pressure defense of MC. MC has some really good guards. McDowell has to limit turnovers to have any chance of coming back.

If by “both teams” you mean both the Lady Pats and Lady Cavs then it could be. But both teams have some of the necessary pieces for success and both have competent coaches who might be able to put those pieces together as the season progresses. Neither team looks like a world beater right now, but I’ve seen teams grow and improve as well.

Mallard Creek won by 15. Lady Titans couldn't handle their speed or pressure. Good thing MC is 8A. They will be a problem.

Yes that's what I heard from a former Freedom great who works with me. Said the Freedom boys would struggle also. Just relaying the message.

Tonight the Lady Patriots had a disastrous second quarter and couldn’t turn it around. It was 7-6 TCR after the first quarter but 30-10 at halftime. Yet Freedom managed to cut it to 39-33 with about a minute left and had the ball. TCR won 41-33, but the comeback is the kind of thing that shows some spirit. The Lady Pats need someone to step up into a leadership role and a couple of the girls are trying to do that. But these things sometimes take time to develop. I will say that once we substituted in the Taylor girl our defense improved significantly. Coach Reddick will have to shape her team based on who is playing what role and build on that.

So we’ve gone from “some folks” to “some guy”. C’mon dude. I’m not even saying he’s wrong, but I’ve been watching this program for over 40 years and the kids can surprise you. Give it another month and we’ll have a clearer picture.

Its not a guy its a girl who's one of your all time great players and she trains players still. But anyways I haven't seen you play just going by her expertise.

The Mallard Creek/N Meck game will be a good one in conf play. I would say N Meck is probably the favorite in 7A right now.

You’re going by one person’s opinion and you went from “some folks” (plural) to one person. Freedom has had at least 20 women play D1 hoops, so “all-time great” could be a lot of people. But I know of at least two ladies who played D1 that helped with the team recently who aren’t helping now and even great players aren’t above sour grapes at not being asked back.

Hey man I know you think I'm making it up but it is what it is. Last nights results prove it. Basketball is down in general in our area boys and girls. McDowell girls have a long ways to go to be as good as last year they could lose some conference games.

I never said you were “making it up”. I just think it’s meaningless. The Lady Pats have been “struggling” for a few years now and haven’t won 20 games since 2020. But even so the girls put together a run and made it all the way to the fourth round just a few years ago. Teams have to figure it out and put the pieces together. We can’t know how that’s going to work out yet. I’m waiting to see what happens.
