He needs to play . We have to win games and if he can pass better than Johnson then let him play. With the defense improving we need to score more points. If I was Stoops I pull out all the stops.

Gunnar Hoak is redshirting. I like his tools, but he was a fringe top 50 prospect in the state of Ohio. Those who actually believe Gunnar Hoak can save the season are displaying what you don't get about college football. If Danny Clark and Jarren Williams take UK scholarships, watch what happens to Hoak.

I don't think what is being said is that he's a five star and needs to play. Seeing his HS films he can throw the ball better than what we're seeing. We have no clue, but as fan's we are curious as to what he can do. And if he can help the team.

Tom Brady can't even hit receivers on his ***. Might wanna hold all these "this guy should be the qb" comments until we get a decent O line..

Honestly the Oline has been doing pretty well lately. You know cuz theres no Schlarman hate posts going. Against Vandys big line they did good. Which is kind of weird to say about our Olinne.

Hoak isnt the answer either. He may be in the future but I am against throwing a freshie out there midseason, burning a RS just to see what he has got. We should accept that we dont have any optioms at QB right now besides SJ. Sadly.

So what y'all are saying is that if SJ gets injured, we play Wright or Mattingly. Got it.

Agree, but still seems like Johnson is getting hurried and flushed out of the pocket more times than not. Rarely do you ever hear "johnson with all day to throw"...

O line was ok last night
I don't think gunner should play, at this point.
But, blaming the O line for that terrible pocket, passing performance is ridiculous.
Thank goodness, he does have some good running instincts.

That isn't what anyone said. The premise was whether Hoak should replace Johnson as the starter.
I don't think the premise is that Hoak should replace Johnson as the starter but someone should be ready to take snaps in a non emergency situation(no injury) we should be willing to change QB's if the situation dictates change. We have 2 weeks to make that decision,it should not be a shoot from the hip call mid-game.

I doubt a change that burns a QB's RS mid-game would be shoot from the hip but a pre-planned viable option if things were not going acceptably.

I agree, that was my point ,the decision need to be made in the upcoming 2 week time frame.A # 2 QB should be in place and ready to go with no doubt as to who it is(Hoak,Wright or Mattingley)

I agree that freshman QB's in most cases aren't ready for the speed of the game. Usually takes their soph or junior year to adjust. But, where this team is now and the need they have there might be no other choice if he can help, and Stoop's wants to keep his job and will do whatever it takes at this point.

I think the coaches are giving him the rep's and if they think he's ready then we might see him play.

If he was better than SJ right now he'd already be playing.
Not necessarily,Johnson was brought here to back up Barker,so far that has been his role with two weeks of time and depending on Barker's status for the rest of the year the coaches have to come up with a plan as to how to get thru the season. Hoaks status (redshirt) was dependent on Barker and Johnson being #1 and #2 that may or may not be the case going forward.

Not saying hoak is ready or not but are you referring to the same coaches who didn't think Benny snell was ready to play the first few games?

When you have a crisis at qb and your *** is on the line redshirt if means nothing. Let's be honest any RS freshman at this point is far from being a lock at UK for 4-5 years

I dont think hoak is the answer. Johnson looked alot better throwing the ball against nmst and usc. He was awful last night but i think he can play better question is how much better. We can beat peay and state with defense and run game but we cannot beat missouri ga or tenn without big improvements from him. He was missing 7 yard throws by a ton. He lost his confidence in throwing hopefully they can keep cpaching him up to atleast give us 150 ypg threw the air

cons
and really, if Hoak plays and win only 5...then everyone will ***** a year was wasted AND it would be; because Stoops is returning next year on 5 wins.
what if he plays and gets hurt
what is he plays and plays poorly
pros
if we win 6 and go to a bowl with Hoak, Great

cons outweigh pros (at this moment)

If Johnson can't get it done in the passing game, I think Hoak will be called upon if ready. At his stage of development, two more weeks might actually be the difference between "not a chance" and "let's take a look"... I am not trying to cast him as some sort of "super frosh" when I say that. If he can throw 10 of 15 for 150 yds 1 TD 0 INT against any and all of our remaining opponents, and avoid fumbles & unnecessary sacks, he gets a look. Is it going to happen? I am guessing he just isn't handling himself in the pocket well enough to convince the staff he can be expected to avoid negative plays against SEC defenses.

No way in hell should Hoak's redshirt get used to save this season. Why would that even be an option? To get 6 wins and go to The Dollar Store bowl? IMO we should save Hoaks redshirt and even still try and get Barker a medical redshirt.

I think Stoops gets at least another year if we keep improving and we will be much better next year, most of the toss up games will be at home. This year is starting to remind me of the 2006 season, with next year drawing comparisons to '07.

I agree with the above post saying that the cons outweigh the pros. Keep getting better on D, receivers get a full year with new OC, next year have 2 legit starting QB's that are healthy, better receivers, better OLine and a much improved D.

Burning the RS makes no sense to me, this team need much more than a QB, no reason to get him hurt, or more importantly mess with his confidence.

Stoops announced before the start of the season that Snell would play and not be redshirted.

I seriously doubt that Hoak will play this year and I am in the camp that believes he shouldn't. I believe Wright is next up since he already has experience with Grans offense. Then it will be Mattingly. I would bet $1,000 that Hoak won't see any P.T.this year. 0% chance

Man, every HS qb that gets recruited to play QB in college looks good against HS competition. Johnson looked good throwing the ball against NM State. Against better competition the game speeds up and decisions have to be made faster. It is a different game.
Question, who was the last backup QB at UK to come in and prove to be better than the QB he replaced?
They come in, might look great for a series or two and then they hit in the mouth or make a mistake that makes them understand that they aren't in high school any more.

Ah the most popular player on the team, the Backup Quarterback. But, there is a reason he is the backup QB. Hoak may very well be a dandy QB in the next couple of years, but there is a learning curve both mentally and physically.
Snell is a different animal in more ways than one. He is 220 lbs. with speed and power, he needed to learn the play book, and work on his blocking. He was on the kick off return team before he was put into the rotation against NMS.

Why burn the RS???

If Hoak can win ONE game that Johnson can't you play him.

You can always RS him next year or the year after. The redshirt does not have to come in a players first year.
