I disagree with this take. Companies found a hack in the system of our emotions, which led to an increase in pay to their employees that aren't coming out of the employee's wallets. There's no incentive for them not to do it.
Question: What do bartenders and waiters make in Europe, where it is not customary to tip (at least so far as I know)?
I can't speak for every country in Europe, but here's what I noticed when I worked in the Netherlands, Switzerland and France.
1) Cash is much more widely used than here. And people would usually still throw a few coins in tip after a meal or settling up on a round. Coins there are worth up to a couple bucks.
2) When you do pay with card the waitress uses the handheld machine at your table; they don't ever walk off with your card. And they still have the prompt to enter tip. So I always tipped like I was in America. I think around 5-10% was expected.
It’s absolutely great cheat for employers. I also think it’s a form of begging as most instances shouldn’t require a tip. Both can be true
It is constantly amazing how little Americans are embarrassed about any more. Asking for charity used to be something that was humiliating and only done as a last resort.
Rupp Arena concession stand and ice cream workers get a big zero for the tip from me. And you have to specifically look for the way to put zero in. When you look at the little gizmo you think the only option you have is 15%.18%, or 20%.

I was working at Panera Bread when it was announced we were gonna start accepting tips. It was so awkward ringing someone up and having that little prompt appear. I didn't do jack to deserve a tip but I wasn't gonna turn it down.
Once my uncle stopped for a panhandler that had a sign "will work for food" and told him he had some stuff he needed done around his house and would pay the guy a good wage at the time to come do it. The guy told him no he didn't really want to work he just wanted the money.
I have seen similar things: pictures of vacation, another Disney trip, and Vegas for a concert.
Here is my kid's "activity." Can you help fund it?

Which is what is truly happening in this situation.
I saw that once where the "gifted and talented" kids were going to Ireland on a trip and a guy was doing a go fund me to pay for him and his kid to go. My thoughts were like your that if I am paying for someone's vacation to Ireland it would be mine.
This was from the bistro at a hotel north of Detroit.
I called them on it every time.
I was told it was "to protect the servers, as people did not understand the difference between Tip and Gratuity."
I politely threw the BS flag after I got my food to go.
My favorite group of panhandlers was this family that would take an old truck and load it up with kids holding up signs that they were broke down. This was under I-24 in Paducah. That truck sure broke down a lot. Every weekend.

Study abroad? Maybe. Especially if family. I would consider chipping in. Depending on where their going and what value it may bring to their education.

Paying $20 for Franks donuts to get delivered to the front door by elementary kids to help fund their school trip to Colonial Williamsburg. Some history and probably Busch Gardens.

Over this past weekend, a young lady from Evansville died in a tragic accident over in India while visiting with her Indian boyfriend’s family. Her parents are good people that I’ve known for years. They have incredible expenses associated with travel, etc as a result of this tragedy. My understanding is that over $30,000 has been raised so far and my wife and I were happy to give.
Another time a guy from my hometown died down in Florida. He daughter started a GoFundMe to pay for his funeral.
There’s no way I would contribute to a GoFundMe so someone can take a fancy trip.
A couple months ago I gave $50 to a woman whose husband was killed in a car accident. She got over $2,000,000 from insurance.
This will go over like a fart in church, but do any of you wonder how people that have professional jobs that die and their family starts a GoFundme accounts didn't have any life insurance?
It's all fine and good to contribute/help others, until you have to switch to unaged/blended Scotch and domestic prosciutto.

You are exactly right. Let them pay their own way. Unreal how this society has become.
At some arenas, many of the concession stands are worked by nonprofits as fundraisers.

I tip baristas when they make me a drink just like I tip bartenders when they pour me a beer.
This makes me sad as hell that some poor woman is out there believing that she's low class and requires government assistance for Christmas dinner (if she's to be believed).
