Sounds like you're just not comfortable playing good (for you) golf, common struggle for many to overcome to finally get over the hump, whether that hump is 90, 80, 75, or 70.

I get uncomfortable (and conservative) when I get a few strokes under par...a few bogeys later, I'm back in my zone and can comfortably card my 72-75 playing my normal game with my normal mindset. #golf

I think this happens to pretty much everyone other than the turbo elite on the golf course. I've gotten a little better at it over the years by playing points in my head instead of thinking about being under par. I also try to think of it as equity in my round. The lower I go, the more bogeys/doubles I can eventually handle and still post a decent round. These thoughts seem to help curb the "oh **** I'm -3 through 7 this could be epic I better make a double to ruin it".

Interesting -- I feel like that mindset is was SCREWS me. "Even if I bogey 3 of the next 5, I'll *still* shoot a ____ "


Did that last month in a qualifier, knowing I could still make those potential bogeys and comfortably get in . Welp, that's exactly what I did. Was -4 through 12, and went +4 over the next 5, and shot 72. Comfortably got in, as I knew I would, but walked off the course pissed off. :grimace: -- The mind is a powerful thing in golf.

^ what kick started it though was the conservative thing I mentioned. I typically play smart, but when I go over-the-top conservative it just doesn't fit. On the hole after I got to -4, (13) I pulled out a hybrid on a short birdie hole I *always* hit driver on -- yep, pull yanked it straight OB.

I think playing 6 "3 hole rounds" with a set goal in mind for each mindset has some merit, it's just easier said than done. #GolfIsHard

Far too often happens that way. Very difficult to stay in the moment and not let your mind wander to the next hole or final score. Seems like every time i do this a bogey (or worse) is right around the corner.

I'd honestly love to see my lifetime 'Bogey-After-Birdie' %, it wouldn't be flattering.

^ Damn. I remember when that place was hosting the State Am, and all sorts of good tournaments. Did it have an Open as well? I know a qualifier was often there.

I'm glad i don't know mine. Too often its more of a birdie double or birdie bogey bogey. Be better off sometimes just taking par haha

Played 9 holes at Lakeside Tuesday night.

1. 8 +4
2. 4 +3
3. 3 +3
4. 4 +3
5. 5. +4
6. 3 +4
7. 5 +5
8. 4 +5
9. 8 +8

Played as best I can possibly play on 2-8 and total cluster fart on 1&9 and 1 is about the easiest hole in the course. I normally playe the front in 45-47. Let two holes kill a memorable 9 for me. I hate this damned game sometimes.

One of the best tactics I've found in money games is to always...ALWAYS remind the guy that just birdied to one, go first because you don't jump birdies and two, great putt back there. It virtually guarantees a fat shot, a pull or a slice.

[laughing] We have a guy (one of the better amateurs around until a recent run of injuries) who plays the reverse juju game to the extreme NON STOP on our money games. It really pisses some people off, and he knows it -- but I think it's hilarious.

He'll say out loud (so the opponent can hear) before shots/putts:



Hell, we might as well give him this, he NEVER misses these

Play hard, he birdies this hole every time

Well, this is basically automatic

Not sure if I've ever seen him miss this green

Watch how pure this putt is, my man is rolling it perfectly today

Playing conservative always kills me. Been hitting my driver really well this year. Should just hit it on every par 4-5. Take some juice off on the shorter ones, but I will take out a 3 wood, 4 iron, etc. and try to get "cute" and end up with a horrible shot instead of just using the club I am confident in.

Went on a run where anything under an 85 was good. I just went into a serious funk. Driver was great but everything else sucked. All of the sudden putts are falling, chips are closer, and I am back to single digits again.

Not shooting a 72 anytime soon, but get me to a 3-4HC and I am ecstatic.

By all means it's good to have that (or whatever) as a goal, but "I'll be ecstatic" -- That's not how it works. If you get to that level of player, that means you've become a pretty damn good golfer, and then you'll be regularly pissed off when you're blowing 72s or better.

Golf is like income in that regard, imo. Whatever level you're at, you may think "if I can just get here, then I'd be perfectly content and set" ...and it's false every time.

Very true. When I really sucked I thought a 15 was great. Then 10 was the Holy Grail. Now 5 is. Best I can have gotten to was a 6 and I was pissed I could not get lower. Its just in our DNA to always want more.

My game is pure [poop] and going the other way, like a down hill train whose brakes have busted. Within the last 2 years, I was a 6 HCP, at least for a while, and basically have been a solid 8 or so for years, but the last 18 months have been a horror show. Cannot break 80 to save my life, and frankly even an 85 is beginning to look pretty good. And I have taken lessons and practiced at least as much as I used to. While my ball striking is terribly inconsistent, my short game has gone to hell as well. Miss a lot of short putts, or F up what should be routine up and downs. I can't even play conservative. Yesterday on a dog leg par 5 where length is not an issue, I played a 3 wood just to hit a simple draw and keep it in the fairway . . . only I cold topped the M-Fer into the weeds. Naturally my next tee shot with the same club came off perfectly. :weary:

I mean, I am pretty GD'ed frustrated right now. Can you tell???

Too many problems in the game of golf to fix them on a message board, but I can tell you a putting tip that works for me. Right before you take it back, lift up the putter like Kuchar does on the driver. I started doing that the last 5 rounds and I have made a ton of putts and scared the hole to death when I miss.

It has really helped me. Had a 20 footer on 18 at Golf Club of the Bluegrass for my first ever 69. Legs were shaking as I had all of my golf buddies on a group text giving them play by play, so of course I missed it. But 70 is my lowest ever.

67 leads. Only one guy in 60's at Tates Creek which is first time I've seen that in last 15 years. Greens were harder and faster than your typical TC greens because of no rain. Probably played 2/3 strokes harder than typical in my opinion. Still not a hard course by any means just played different than most guys are used to.

Yeah, seems a little unusual for you to touch it up on the par 5.

Cawood, if it makes you feel better, Stacy Lewis made a 10 on no. 18 at the US Open yesterday, that after running off 4 birdies in a row to get in contention. :weary:

Been watching women's golf and Senior golf both majors. Missed this today.

Good for him. Struggling bad but continued on through adversity and it finally it paid off.
