Had the 31-year-old Bell accepted, he would have become the FBS’s youngest head coach. This year was his second in his positions at Arkansas State, which won the Sun Belt championship with a 9–3 record.

One of college football’s brightest young minds, Bell spent the last five seasons working with up-and-coming Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson. Under Bell’s up-tempo, spread offense this season, the Red Wolves are 10th nationally in scoring offense (41 points per game). Last season, Arkansas State broke single-season school records for total yardage (6,194), points scored (477) and total plays (1,024).

I think Bell could get the job done here. I just hope that if he is the hire that Stoops will let this guy do his thing and not hinder him. I have no insider knowledge and cannot say for sure that Stoops has micromanaged Brown and Dawson at UK. But the evidence suggests that he has to some degree. Neither the offense that Brown ran at TTU or that Dawson understudied at WVU look similar to what they ran at UK. Brown got out of town after only a couple of seasons. And Dawson made it all of one season before getting canned. I think it is fair to say that there has been at least some degree of disagreement on the coaching staff about how the offense should be run.

Stoops needs to find a competent guy that runs a potent offense. Then he needs to let him do his thing and stay out of the way. If you bring in a guy to run an uptempo spread, then let him run an uptempo spread. If you start tinkering with that system and trying to put square pegs in round holes, you're going to hamstring the OC and turn his potent offense into absolute crap.

I hope Stoops learned his lesson by passing on Lincoln Riley in favor of Dawson's more "physical" style. And I hope that our new hire, whoever he is, can inject the same sort of energy into our offense as Lincoln Riley did at OU. And finally, I hope like hell that Stoops won't try to micromanage everything the new OC does so that the guy can have some chance to be successful. If he'll just focus on head coaching duties and let the OC do his thing, maybe just maybe we'll put a decent product on the field next season.

This article looks eerily similar to the ones we read on Lincoln Riley. I really hope we bring this guy here.

Yup. Stoops badly bungled that hire. Hopefully he can redeem himself by going out there and finding the next Lincoln Riley.

I'm pretty sure Riley passed on us in favor of Oklahoma.

can't see any way this guy would turn down a head coaching job but then take the UK OC job

no way is he being hired here, some of you are intentionally setting yourselves & others up to be disappointed

Unfortunately, I agree 100% unless UK does something they've never been willing to do in the past.

UK is going to have to intentionally overpay for an assistant if they want a quality hire at this point. Similar to how you need to price a house to compensate for the busy road it sets on, UK needs to price the pay rate above what seems reasonable in order to compensate for the lack of desire to take the position.

I'd love to know if Stoops is asked for a wish list in which money is not a barrier and then see what UK's Admin would be willing to pay for those people.

JRowland suggested that the new OC is probably coaching in one of this weekend's bowl games. I think Arkansas St is playing this weekend. And Mac Jones just started following Bell. May not mean anything.

If it is already a done deal logically Mangino would be the hire, Stoops has not had time to interview & offer a job to Bell with just firing Dawson on Sunday night

For whatever reason Stoops feels he needs to stand beside his OC to tell him every play he wants run. Walt Bell is a guy you would love to see work his magic in the SECE. If Bell demands that Stoops stand at a minimum of 15 yards away from his in every game it might work. I can almost close my eyes and hear Stoops telling his OC " No No No dont run that"

Stoops has to wait the state mandated 7-10 working days (whatever it is) before anything can be announced officially. Stupid state law about job postings.

At least the job posting won't exclude entire races of people like UofL's job postings

Stoops has prob been talking for a couple of weeks with a candidate in case he decided to pull the trigger.

I think it's been a done deal for whoever has the job. This has all been planned for some time and now just has to be signed. Stoops is not looking for someone either, he has his man. JMO

Bell has no reason to come to UK. I know folks want to think moving to an SEC job is the next big step for any young coach, but guys like this are not dumb. He knows he is good, is a hot commodity, and has an entire career in front of him. Much like Riley, he has to evaluate every situation he may go to and the main thought is what is the best situation to be successful quick and build an even stronger resume for a nice HC job down the road.

UK has gone through 2 OC's under Stoops with the last one being fired after only one season and lots of chatter that Stoops is difficult to work with on that side of the ball. If the guy gets hired and has any success, he is gone. It may save Stoops rear end in the short term but this program desperately needs continuity on that side of the ball and someone who can help control Stoops. To me, you go with an older more experienced guy who is not looking for his first HC job the second he has success and can help Stoops with managing this program.
