They play so fundamentally sound and Murray is a fun player to watch. Congrats to the Hawkeyes.

They had quite a run to finish the season. All those low ranked players sure put on a show…

Doing what they did to a Cats team that was competitive in more games than at any time in program history must have done wonders for Iowa’s confidence.

I saw a while back there was a debate here on what type of coach Northwestern should go for after Collins. I really think a lot of the Wildcat fans here were undervaluing experience.

There’s a persistent feeling among college fans in general that what’s needed for their program is a young coach to “energize recruiting.” I think what is far more important for schools that aren’t bluebloods is a coach with a proven ability to EVALUATE recruits. The Iowa program wouldn’t be where it is now without Coach McCaffery’s ability to uncover hidden gems like Aaron White, Peter Jok, Luka Garza (at the time Iowa offered) the Murray twins, et al.

How do you find a coach with that kind of evaluation ability? I think you look for a coach who, like McCaffery, has had success at multiple college jobs. McCaffery had taken college teams from PA, NC and NY to the NCAA tourney before taking over in Iowa City. Were I the Northwestern AD, I would look for someone with a similar track record of success in multiple jobs. The flavor-of-the-month buzzy young coach is way too risky for the Wildcat job.
