While Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos is a passionate advocate for reforming our nation’s schools, her views on higher education are less well known. The U.S. Department Education has a major impact on colleges and universities and their students, especially regarding financial aid and civil rights.

Mrs. DeVos’ confirmation hearing shed little light on the policies she would pursue. With more than three decades of experience leading colleges and universities, I would like to offer the nominee some advice on the urgent issues facing higher education today.

I'll answer these questions that Gee puts out there - The difficult question, however, is how do we, as higher education leaders, create an atmosphere in which people will not be afraid of challenging conversations? How do we lay the foundation that teaches our young people the skills they need to engage in civil discourse?

The foundation of people skills and civil discourse start a lot earlier than their college years. It shouldn't be up to the universities to lay a foundation but rather hone the skills taught at an earlier age. Challenging conversations - start by getting these folks to realize the answer to everything isn't 'yes'...get ready to hear someone say 'no' and learn how to handle that disagreement.

Summed up - quit raising a bunch of pissbabies.

I think Gee glossed over the enormous problems of Obama's Title IX enforcement of university treatment of sexual assault. It eliminates due process for students and forces universities to adjudicate cases they are ill equipped to handle. This must stop. We must get law enforcement involved when assault occurs.

Each person is protected by our Constitution. There is a standard of beyond a reasonable doubt. To be represented by an attorney. To be able to confront your accuser. To review all evidence against the accused. To be able to subpoena evidence, This is not happening on campuses today.

I wonder what jobs those 25-34 year olds are in? Are they in their related fields of study? At age 25, I had graduated from both undergrad and dental school. I'm not sure how you start comparing someone that should be 3 years out of undergrad with someone who hasn't even gone to school. How about debt vs no debt? Some of that is just a college adminstrator trying to make the case for more funding for higher education to keep the cost up. Fewer people going to college will eventually drive down the cost to get more interested in attending.

Higher Education in this country is devolving into an overpriced mess.
