Hypothetical here...like John C. said, what if State would do the miraculous and win the ACC tourney and then go to the Sweet 16 again. Can you back out and let him finish or do you fire him anyway??? Unless they're keeping it a secret, I don't see who State has on their radar that woulda wanna coach. They fired Herb and he went to ASUnand did really well. I still feel like one of the main problems is releasing total control to the coach to discipline the players as he sees fit.

I talked with a former football player that played when Chuck was coaching. His son and my son worked out at the same sports training facility. This player went on to the NFL and had an ok career. He told me that the coaches didn't have full control to do what they wanted and that the university would always say coaches were being to harsh. How do you as an AD tell your coach that a player shouldn't be punished a certain way???

To your first point - Archie Miller. Maybe he would be a bust but as I previously noted: went to NC State, played at NC State, assistant coach at NC State, wife also went to State. I don't see him as being a bust though. The Atlantic 10 can't touch the ACC but he consistently has had Dayton at the top and made significant NCAA tourney runs.

Don't have much knowledge regarding your second point as I wasn't a big State fan by then but do find that interesting. So this player basically felt that the coaches wanted to punish players more harshly yet the university stepped in and said no don't punish them?

The university and AD should only step in for extreme circumstances. Other than that you have to let them do their jobs. University has to trust they've hired a good AD. The AD has to trust that they've hired a good coach (otherwise pick someone else).

Yes! This player who played football said he knew of a occasions where Chuck or staff would go to punish a player and the school/someone would step in and wanna give a "warning" even though this wasn't a first offense. I can only imagine that if it happened on the football field in happened on the court as well.

I'd like to see Archie at State. I think he'd be good but "my" rule of thumb on coaches goes like this...

Year 1-3 is a wash on the at happens during he season. You're not gonna get all your recruits that you want. Some of those will be previous commits.

Year 4-5 you should slowly improve on be better than the first 3 years because they're your recruits coming in.

Year 6-7...well if you're still sucking and constantly losing games to a much weaker opponent then it's time for the school to look at other options.

Sendek was mentioned earlier in this thread. He's now coaching at Santa Clara. I'm going to go off-topic a little here, but the league where Santa Clara plays in, the West Coast, has several notable coaches. Just catches me by surprise that a mid-major conference has so many guys with impressive resumes... Mark Few (Gonzaga), Randy Bennett (Saint Mary's), and Dave Rose (BYU) have all been at their respective schools for 10+ years and they've all advanced to the Sweet 16. Portland has 2x NBA All-Star, Terry Porter; Pacific has former NBA Rookie of the Year, Damon Stoudamire, at the helm; the aformentioned Herb Sendek is at Santa Clara (NC State/ASU Head Coach); former Charlotte Bobcats/St.John's Coach, Mike Dunlap, is the head coach at Loyola Marymount. Former KU guard and 7-year NBA Vet, Rex Walters, had previously been coaching at San Francisco until he was fired last spring. The only schools missing are San Diego and Pepperdine. Paul Westpaul was coaching at Pepperdine not too long ago, though.

What if the unthinkable and unbelievable happened and NCSU not only wins the ACC tourney but the NCAA tourney and the coach who cuts the nets down has already been fired. OFC

Any updates on candidates. Would they consider a successful coach at say one from a lower D1 conference who was at a pretty good upper level school as a top asst. Just an example but not necessarily him but Matt Matheny from Elon. OFC

I think Archie Miller will be their first choice. And he should be.

IMO, I still think the job is an attractive one. Sure, they're a mess....but it's Tobacco Road. It's not Duke, it's not UNC....but there are worse jobs and opportunities out there. You give yourself a fighting chance. Plus, you have boosters and people in power.

That's very interesting to hear. I remember hearing that Chuck didn't really have much control over the team but maybe that was due to the school (which is ludicrous - hopefully that has changed). As far as coaching expectations based on timelines, I tend to agree with you but a coach should show improvement, not digression by year 4-5. Instead, in the case of Gottfried, he proved he could win with Sidney's recruits but gradually had many players transfer and never proved he could coach. I always said that we needed to pay Lutz what he wanted to keep him so that someone on the bench could teach basketball. When he dropped off the coaching staff I was extremely worried and at this point my fears have been confirmed.

Something I thought about as I was watching the Florida USC game last night. Mike White at one point called a timeout and a manager immediately rushed to him, gave him the clipboard and he went to work drawing up a play while commanding the attention of his players. I literally never saw Gottfried do that. During timeouts Gottfried would walk to the middle of the court looking up or down (as if he was thinking), take forever to draw anything up, and command no attention from his team. I don't think he is a bad guy at all but he needs someone like a Lutz to be able to actually draw up plays.

I said the exact same thing in the main board thread on Calipari defending Gottfried. So many things wrong with how this situation was handled. At this point, if you're Debbie Yow, don't you find yourself pulling against your school so that this doesn't happen? Absurd. I'm guessing that she could renege on the whole firing thing but that would be one of the more ridiculous situations. Obviously there's a higher probability of me getting the NC State coaching job than them winning the whole thing but them winning the ACC tournament isn't completely out of the question. Team is still extremely talented.

I'd take the job! Offer it to me! Lol if I were a coach and didn't have a shot at Duke, UK or IU a school like state would be a great place

You certainly have to be someone that is ready to compete - the ACC is a monster now. Takes the right type of person but in order to be the best you have to compete with the best. If you seek mediocrity, the ACC isn't for you. Greg Marshall sure loves to compete and I'd welcome him with open arms but he has no ties to NC State and already has a big contract (Koch brothers are involved at Wichita State - talk about deep pockets). That's why I continue to find myself wanting Archie Miller - strong NC State ties.

Yes our fanbase can be crazy but it's because we haven't been good at anything in sooooo long. I pride myself of being a part of the best public university in the State but it can be painful in terms of athletics. Luckily going to a Duke NCAA championship every few years subsides the pain :).
