It will be great to have good ol' No. 30 on the bench in Evanston. Here's the release....

EVANSTON, Ill. – Sullivan-Ubben Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Collins announced that former Northwestern standout Bryant McIntosh is returning as the program’s assistant director of basketball operations.

“We are really excited to bring Bryant back home,” said Collins. “He is one of the all-time great players in Northwestern history and was a big part of us reaching our first NCAA tournament. As a student-athlete he was instrumental in helping us build our program, and to bring him back to help mentor these young players and show them what it takes to be a Northwestern basketball player is going to be a big addition.”

“I am extremely grateful to Dr. Phillips, Coach Collins and the staff for giving me the opportunity to come back home,” said McIntosh. “I care deeply for this University and I am excited to be back around the program, student-athletes and staff. This is family. There is no better place to learn and grow as I begin my professional career to one day be a head coach.”

A four-year starter, McIntosh is one of three players in Big Ten history to record at least 1,600 points and 700 assists in a career. A second-team All-Big Ten pick as a junior, he holds the top two single-season assist marks in school history and his 700 career assists are a school record.

The Greensburg, Indiana, native ranks sixth all-time at NU with 1,683 career points while also placing in the top 10 for games played, games started, field goals, minutes played and free throw percentage. He averaged 13.0 points per game and 5.4 assists per game throughout his career.

An Academic All-Big Ten honoree, McIntosh graduated from Northwestern in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

After graduating from Northwestern, McIntosh played professionally for a season in Belgium with the Leuven Bears.

McIntosh’s responsibilities will include coordinating film exchange with other universities, managing film operations for practices and games, assisting with team travel, and helping the coaching staff with on-campus recruiting events and tasks. He will also assist the director of operations in overseeing the team’s managers and coordinating summer camps.

And it's great to get the practice body.

I think Pat Spencer and Bouie may really benefit from this.

Jershon Cobb is still on the staff. Former players are great mentors for the team.

Can we get a uniform for him and get another year of eligibility? Maybe some makeup so he looks like another guard with eligibility?

Under NCAA rules he won't be allowed to work directly with the players, or be on the floor with them for practice. The University of Idaho just got nailed for violating NCAA rules prohibiting noncoaching staff members from participating in practice. I'm assuming "assistant director of operations" is considered a "non-coaching staff" position under NCAA rules.

Here's the rule verbatim: "11.7.3 Noncoaching Staff Member with Sport-Specific Responsibilities. [A] A noncoaching staff member with sport-specific responsibilities (e.g., director of operations, administrative assistant) is prohibited from participating in on-court or on-field activities (e.g., assist with drills, throw batting practice, signal plays) and is prohibited from participating with or observing student-athletes in the staff member's sport who are engaged in nonorganized voluntary athletically related activities (e.g., pick-up games). (Adopted: 1/16/10, Revised: 1/18/14 effective 8/1/14) 11.7.4 Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] There shall be a limit of one head coach, 10 assistant coaches and four graduate assistants."

Good to see the NCAA has its priorities in order. God forbid a non-coach played pickup with a player. Unfortunately I don't have time to comment further as I have to run to a meeting with Nike to discuss a $100,000 under the table payment for a recruit. As long as I have plausible deniability (probably shouldn't have typed that last sentence), it's all good!

It also sounds like he can only meet with recruits on campus. True?

A real honor for Mac. Congrats!

His comments show that he's still got that total dedication to NU which likely separated him from other applicants.

That is so awesome! Love BMac and will forever be grateful for his role in the NCAA run we had.

In my mind, the best PG we ever had....who’s senior season was derailed by injury.

Yup, Will never forget him watching him play nearly his entire final game in NYC in the BTT in obvious pain, just because he knew his team needed him to be out there if they had any chance at all.

And I not certain if his career assists record at NU will EVER be broken...

Bryant will take over for Tad Glibert who has been the video coordinator for years. Him and his wife are doing a 2 year mission in Africa. Pretty amazing story.

Kudos all the way around.

I confirmed with Bryant yesterday that he has, indeed, retired as a player.

"My body being banged up the last 3 years just took its toll," he said. "Took the joy of it away."

The guy was a warrior.

Turned down an opportunity to play on the Pacers summer league team. I’ve watched him play since he was in kindergarten. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to watch a team that he’s the head coach of.
