Great PSU play calls over the years

I think most Penn Staters know this, but for those who may not:

Go back and watch all of the plays after PSU gets the ball down to the 3 yard line. 1st Down, 2nd Down, 3rd Down, and the first two-point conversion try.

See if you notice anything "funny" about the Missouri defense.
There is also an interesting "back story" once you notice the oddity.
Standard 4-6-2 defense ;)

Is that former Pitt guy Gottfried in the back ground admonishing the play and Paterno?
I believe you're correct since he and Ron Franklin were the primetime duo for ESPN back then.

Whatever the play call was on the Giftopolous INT at the ‘97 Fiesta Bowl.
Actually there was no defensive play call by Jerry on Miami's 4th down play. Shane Conlin asked Jerry what defensive alignment they should play on the 4th down and Jerry froze up and said I can't help you and sent them back on the field to fend for themselves.

Yep. And the "back story" is that the Ref (the Back Judge, I believe) who finally threw a flag on the 2 point conversion (for Too Many Men on the Field), was asked after the game how he managed to catch that - in all the pandemonium of the moment.

He said it was just the basics of doing his job, that on EVERY play the first thing he does is count the number of players on the field. :) (except for, apparently, the previous 3)

Correct. I believe Trey Bauer’s version was that Jerry was blubbering something unrecognizable.

So was I! Actually I was dead sure Miami would not score on that 4th down play. I’m not usually like that, as you may have noticed over the years. But that play, “They’re not going to score!”

I thought this thread wa going to be about annnouncer calls.
My first thought is Keith Jackson at 95 Rose Bowl
“He’s gone. Goodbye”.
Second thought. 83 sugar bowl
“He’s going for the bundelllllllllle…”

Man, you were more confident than I was sitting front row in the end zone.

On that last possession, I thought...no way are we letting them score.

Then Conlan missed an INT and they got the big gainer on 4th and 6 with around 2:30 left....doubt was creeping in for me.

Best play call was my Paterno versus Michigan. We needed a touchdown to win. Had the ball on the 1 or 2 yard line with a first and goal. Tried 3 attempts up the middle with very little success. We called time out; announcers prognosticated a run to long side of the field. After game, Michigan players stated that they were expecting a run to the outside. Our QB came back in the huddle and called the play, several players shrugged their shoulders, namely, our left guard and center. Well we ran the play --yes -- it was a run up the middle that was stopped by the players the left guard and center were supposed to block. Michigan won. Paterno was vilified for the call. JVP called the correct play -- his players, left guard & center, left him and their teammates down by missing their blocks.

The best play is not always successful for a myriad of reasons.

Yep. As proud as I am about this win, Jimmy Johnson was the most important factor in that game.
Also helped that Testaverde was such an egomaniac that he convinced Jimmy to let him go win the game. Vinny was playing for the name on the back of the jersey that night.

But I'm firmly convinced that the Penn State coaching staff knew that, and game planned accordingly.

Miami had been pass happy the entire game and still Vinny wanted more.

Remember how some PSU seniors (not sure who, definitely not the entire team) shared a case of beer with Coach (and perhaps his assistants, not sure) after the Miami game? Jimmy childishly mentioned this in his bio, casting aspersions on a team and coaching staff that had gone, what, 23-1 and won a national championship. A case of beer! What a dick.

1987 Fiesa Bowl vs Texas

Second half, on the 11 yard line Richardson hands to Eberly who runs to the right and hands to Fields who ran it back to the left. Fields takes ito the 2 yard Iine - the play broke open the game.
