Unfortunately, this is not a cancel culture topic, the issue isn't the dumb statement....it is an isolated issue if it's 1 thing, there's really nothing here to debate.
What McDermott opens himself up to, is what got Pat Chambers in trouble at PSU....it was the crazy dumb/ignorant statement, that got compiled with the prior players who perhaps had their own run-ins with Chambers that pushed them to act.
There are former players that will be asked about McDermott and that's the potential issue here. If something else gets uncovered that was swept under the rug, rest assured it's not the original comment that gets you, it's the combination of things.
On a separate item and same issue, the Indians Pitching Coach and former Mets Manager, Mackey Callaway.....at first, it was the accusation by the former reporter.....then it became 2 or 3....then more than that.....
And then the process traced back to his Cleveland timeframe and what did or didn't the Indians organization know about Callaway as a person.....did they know he was creepy and/or a sexual harassment dude for awhile...??
First the Indians said they didn't know anything like this with Callaway.....THEN they thought about it some more, they acknowledged they did know he was problematic during his Cleveland timeframe.....
It's never the isolated mistake or misstep.....it's the pattern of hiccups/mistakes and what you did or didn't know if you are Creighton.....if players come forward saying that they went to people above McDermott to other places in the Athletic Department and Creighton sat on them and did nothing, McDermott is going to get suspended or beyond.
