I think he was the name most thought, and he is a really terrific choice. I can't think of a better choice.

Well deserved. I suppose a younger candidate could have brought some longer term stability, as I'm not sure you're going to get a renewal from Pop after 2020. But he's a great coach, who makes a lot of sense for continuity for the US men's team.

Love the choice of Pop as head coach, but he will be 70 by the 2020 Olympics which might be an issue. Obviously it looks like it's a one-time thing and I hope Doc Rivers gets the nod after Pop.

Meh....Coach K will be 69 at the Olympics next summer. These great coaches are just wired different. I also wouldn't be surprised if Pop walked away from the NBA entirely after this coming season and made the USA job his focus.

On top of Poppovich being named the coach of Team USA from 2017-2020, it also mentions that Coach K will move into a special advisory position with Team USA during that same time period. I see that as a good sign that Coach K will be coaching at Duke until at least either the 2019-20 or 2020-21 season.
