Report: Gruden used racist comment in '11 email

Raiders coach Jon Gruden used a racist comment in referring to NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith in an email 10 years ago, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

So why is no one talking about the fact that it took 10 years for Smith to call out Gruden?

Not defending the comment, but who among us has never uttered something they would rather not be made public? 10 years ago he made an offensive comment. He's spent 40 years in football and no one has ever accused him of being a racist. But one comment in one email 10 years ago and now he's a horrible racist and must be fired? Kind of hard to argue that mocking a black persons lips in an email wouldn't be problematic for a dude paid 10 million a year to coach mostly black players and I'm a fan of the Raiders.

Mark Davis is pretty serious about this stuff and that's the only person that Gruden needs to be concerned about offending. The problem isn't some social justice warrior canceling him, the problem is that his boss will be the one determining his future.

Once again, I'm not going to act like I haven't said off color jokes. This was not that at all. Jon was passed and is also half adding an apology by acting like he didn't use a trope.. But I also know time, place and setting. A formal email is none of the above.

I believe DeMaurice Smith was up for reelection as president of the NFLPA, maybe that is why the email came out. Also, why didn't ESPN can Gruden over this in 2011? Seems like the kind of thing they would be quick to pull the trigger on.

There's literally 100 other things Gruden could have said that wasn't stereotypical, he chose to point out his big lips because he was angry and thought no one would see it/hear about it.

By the way, he ain't getting fired over this. You folks are more outraged by the perceived outrage than Demaurice Smith is likely outraged about the comments.
