keep him
A lot of unknowns and possibilities:keep him
Its just not how it works anymore. Grunk put enough on tape to get $1M AND a starting job somewhere. Becht simply is not going somewhere to make a good check and compete. He'll be looking for $3+ Mil AND a starting job at a premier football power. Im team Grunk myself, he throws a very nice ball and anticipates well, plus, you get to have him for 2 or 3 years and develop/recruit around him.Like Grunk and see him as a quality QB, and also like what I read about Becht, who has an advantage in experience
2 QB's with Million Dollar+ NIL pay?
Is that likely?
(maybe it is)
I get why Campbell would want to bring in Becht. But i wouldnt do that at the expense of Grunk. Its just not how it works anymore. Grunk put enough on tape to get $1M AND a starting job somewhere. Becht simply is not going somewhere to make a good check and compete. He'll be looking for $3+ Mil AND a starting job at a premier football power. I want Grunk as the starter in 2026, but I also realize that new HC’s generally bring in their own QBs who know their system and they trust. That’s just how it works. Becht is not the only potential ISU qb to possibly portal into PSU. ISU freshman qb, Alex Manske, a 4 star who Campbell’s staff is really high on, entered the portal. The next couple weeks will be super interesting.
If Grunk goes to the portal he's going to get paid very well and will expect to be paid very well to stay. Campbell has a few days to work that out. This would make more long term sense than Becht at this point. Keep Grunk and bring in this kid for far less NIL than Becht.
By this you mean he's allowed to do soGrunk isn't afraid to throw over the middle, down field, everywhere and anywhere, anytime.
It was not a questionIs that a question or a statement? If that’s a statement you get a definite like. If that’s a question, all I can say is “Daa”. Grunk is a stud.
Another of Franklin’s recruits who turned out to be pretty good. I doubt Campbell will be able to keep him. I think Campbell will want his own guy running the show. Becht.
If I was forced to bet my house on the matter, I would bet it is Becht and Manske portaling in and Grunk finds a nice gig elsewhere in P4. I would prefer we spend $5m total for both Becht and Grunk and have known qb solutions for 2026-2028, but I don’t think that is happening. And I am sure Grunk believes he can start for a top P4 program next season.I fully expect Grunk to move on. He has proven he can be a viable starting option for a number of P4 teams and assuredly for a group of 5 school. However, given that the HC, OC, and QB coaches will be coming in with their own system it is unlikely he will be able to compete against someone who had 3 years in that system. Now, if Becht does not come, then it is more likely he can retain Grunk and he and the team will take their lumps learning the system. What is important to realize is that Campbell has an offensive identity and wants players that can run his system, so the players that can accomplish this will be the ones he will prioritize. If Becht comes and Manske portals in Penn State will be flush for next year, especially with Kase Evans on board. It makes zero sense if I have two players in house who have been developed under a system to limit the system to allow a player to "catch up" especially if there is no assurance he does not skip out in a year.
In any case, Campbell's job, his decision,
This started with AG PaxtonNCAA and its CSC need to configure a way to have a hard salary cap amongst other issues.
The CSC agreement is not even in effect until all teams sign the contract. Tx Tech lawyers said do not sign the agreement. The Athletic has a great article up on this subject. The Wild West mode is still in effect even with the CSC. A lot of contrived work arounds are already being used.
No player should be guaranteed a starting job they should earn it on the field. Let them walk if that is the case.Everyone does understand that after yesterday it's more likely that Grunk and others (especially Martin) will now be going to the portal unless they're guaranteed the starting job, right?
Plus, they're going to want to be paid to stay.
Then we're going to lose them and no one is coming here from the portalNo player should be guaranteed a starting job they should earn it on the field. Let them walk if that is the case.
The same with coaches. No player should be guaranteed a starting job they should earn it on the field. Let them walk if that is the case.
That sounds ideal and great, but that is just not how it works in this era. This era is about getting paid and being given the starting job. If you do not get onboard you fade like Dabo into obscurity. No player should be guaranteed a starting job they should earn it on the field. Let them walk if that is the case.
Maybe he doesn’t want to stay. Everyone acts like it’s only Campbell’s decision and he can just keep him.keep him
Do coaches have to prove themselves on each play or just each game before they get fired? The same with coaches.
No player should be guaranteed a starting job they should earn it on the field. Let them walk if that is the case.
Just my opinion, but this is a different time in college football. Then we're going to lose them and no one is coming here from the portal
Not sure how you think we field a team
Precisely.I get why Campbell would want to bring in Becht. But i wouldnt do that at the expense of Grunk.
Trust me, I get what you're saying and the way you'd like things would be better. It's just not realistic and we sadly need to accept that kids have power.Just my opinion, but this is a different time in college football.
Yeah no sense in keeping a QB who has demonstrated he can actually play at a high level and has 3 years of eligibility left when you can let him leave and bank on one or more recruits who have never played a down in college. Makes perfect sense to me. But f course it’s Campbell’s decision.I fully expect Grunk to move on. He has proven he can be a viable starting option for a number of P4 teams and assuredly for a group of 5 school. However, given that the HC, OC, and QB coaches will be coming in with their own system it is unlikely he will be able to compete against someone who had 3 years in that system. Exactly. Isn’t that one of the criticisms leveled at Franklin? Guaranteeing starting jobs and playing favorite players. No player should be guaranteed a starting job they should earn it on the field. Let them walk if that is the case.

I'd keep Grunk but you're being unfair to Becht. Becht > TraceBecht is a homeless man’s McSorely. If Campbell spends NIL to bring in his binky comfort item for 1 year instead of keeping a better but unfamiliar player for 3 years, it’s a dumb move.
Not even close but we’ll agree to disagree. He was honorable mention all big 12 in 24 throwing to two NFL WRs. Beyond that, no recognition. He’s won zero important games unless you count a pop tart bowl. He’s good. He’s not worth letting 3 years of Grunk walk.I'd keep Grunk but you're being unfair to Becht. Becht > Trace
All of that at Iowa StateNot even close but we’ll agree to disagree. He was honorable mention all big 12 in 24 throwing to two NFL WRs. Beyond that, no recognition. He’s won zero important games unless you count a pop tart bowl. He’s good. He’s not worth letting 3 years of Grunk walk.
So you think there is a team that will guarantee Grunk a starting position?Trust me, I get what you're saying and the way you'd like things would be better. It's just not realistic and we sadly need to accept that kids have power.
If Campbell doesn't tell Grunk he's the starter; he'd be an idiot to return. He has to have that assurance or he needs to go. Just reality, he can't sit another year--he's ready to play.
Many teams...lesser QBs in the portal will be as well. You realize how many programs there are in FBS....So you think there is a team that will guarantee Grunk a starting position?
