It doesn't get any crazier than this? We have a perfect record and we beat them by 32 and they are ahead of us. Could Kansas really get a #1 seed?

Still a long way to go, pay no attention to those numbers right now, they will even out eventually. The Big12 is a tough league, not ACC tough but they're tough. KU will take some lumps and their RPI will take a hit at some point.
We all know they aren't the best team in the country, top 10 yes, top 5? No.

This is why the old RPI is practically meaningless. But the NCAA still swears by it, which says a lot about the NCAA.

This is why I think the computer rankings are garbage. A human would never put Kansas ahead of Kentucky after the thrashing.

The RPI is skewed heavily early on by the projected ratings of teams. It's kind of like the SoS in that regard. As the year goes on it gets more reliable. I respect, and even admire KU's program, but there's no way they are the best team in the country.

The most amazing thing about Kansas isn't that they're #1 in the RPI. It's that their two losses have come by a combined 57 points.

Please don't lump in the garbage RPI (which was developed in the early 1980s, iirc, and simple-minded trash) with good, tested computer rankings that actually do a pretty good job. Thanks.

"The RPI lacks theoretical justification from a statistical standpoint."
If any computer ranking puts anyone ahead of Kentucky at this point its garbage just as the RPI is

0.0002. To a really good team that already has 3 terrific road wins.
No reason to throw away one of the best models around.
I agree... that was my point
Gotcha.

UK is only team on list with 4 wins over current RPI top 25.
UL is 0-2 vs current RPI 25. Beat OSU but they since dropped out.
Arkansas 3-0 vs current RPI top 25

The RPI is just based on the numbers during the course of the season, there's no projection at all of future events.

FWIW, the RPI's problem is that it doesn't directly measure a team's strength, and frankly was never designed for that purpose.

Yet fans and journalists try to use it for the purpose of determining which team is rated higher than another. A complete misuse of the rating.

BTW, if anyone is discussing how strong a team is (or isn't), and they only refer to the RPI as a way of providing evidence, that's a tip-off right there that they have no idea what they're talking about.

So, in your more educated opinion than anyone else on here, what does the RPI do exactly?
