GW vs PM thoughts

I have spent all week watching film on PM from Friday night last week until today. This will be my most indepth breakdown of the year so far. And Iwant to make this VERY CLEAR I have nothing but respect for PM. The fans I've spoke with here have always been nice. So please don't take anything I say as disrespect it isn't it is simply my opinion. So while I must say they are impressive in the way they run that O but I do see some holes. 1 The line play, yes they have ok size but they don't get much push on the D line. The blocking schemes are very basic alot of double team, chop block and down blocking. So they are extremely vulnerable if you can get penetration across the line of scrimmage. I think GW will do that all night.

2 Lack of any real break away speed GW will have a major speed advantage in this game. I've seen film on top of film and yes while I realize that isn't in person it will give you a good perception of size and speed. And with PM I don't see much at all they do run hard but against a team as deep and fast as GW you have to have some burners.

3 Running into the teeth of the D yes that is what the power T is for. But if your line isn't on its A game 100% you will not have any success. #64 is the pivot point imo of that line. If he isn't abusing his opponent the left is completely gone. He will probably be on Dylan Anderson or Larry Isaac. Both are freaks of nature and will hit you for the fun of hitting. #64 is a big boy but he will be the smaller man in 99% of the matchups that GW will show him. I said it to mmqp in like week 1 PM will go as the line does. This will have to be there best played game all year to even stand a chance at winning.

4 Lack of passing yes they do pass but it is far and few between. And when they do its passes to the flats to a back peeling out or one of the TE on a mid level curl route. GWs LBs are great at dropping out to cover the pass. And our DBs will force everything underneath to keep the passes shallow.
That's the holes I see when watching PM on O. I see a few more on D but I'll only talk about the major ones. 1 Again lack of speed they say speed kills and GW has a wealth of it. The LBs of PM will be tested all night by having to play a spread O. They will have to cover everything that moves or they will get burnt badly. Again speed will be at a disadvantage for them.

2 Lack of penetration by the D line sometimes they are ok but alot of the time they just try and get in your way. That is a tactic to free up there LB's so they can split the gaps and get pressure. Lack of penetration will not work here.

3 Size of the DBs I haven't seen a single DB close to 6'1. GW will use 6 WRs that are 6'-6'3 all with great range and speed. Again another group on PM'S D that will be tested all night. They will see so many different kids who are all legitimate threats to score.

So with all of that here are my keys to victory for both teams.
PM
1- On O hold onto the ball for long drives keep GW'S O off the field. Make this a possession game. And NO MISTAKES ie not To's and limited penalties.
2- Stick to the run game it's there money those shallow passes will only develop if the run game keeps us honest.
3- Nelson, Nelson, Nelson ride your work horse to victory the young man is so close to the all time record for a reason. Force GW to focus on the other 2 if not we will key on him and make his night miserable.
On D
1- The DBs and LBs will have to play there best game of the year. It will have to be an A+ performance to contain all of our weapons.
2- Blitz and shoot what very small gaps you will have with a high level of success. If you can't you will get burned
3- Line play, Line play, Line play that D line has to make us uncomfortable if they don't we will go to work on the the LBs and DBs. We get to the second level really well and really fast. As I side above mmqp and me agreed if that line is off the whole team is off. Line failure means team failure.

Key's to victory for GW on O
1- Use our speed and depth to spread the D thin force them to stop every weapon. Don't focus on the run or the pass spread the wealth by spreading the D.
2- Use our size to wear the D down by constant pressure. Allowing us to get to the second and third levels.
3 Play or high paced game don't engage in a slow paced methodical game. Do what GW does best flood the field with talent and depth. Make PM keep up or fade away and just take advantage of mismatches. We have a huge WR group in actual size and in depth keep the D honest don't allow the to sell out.

Key's on D for GW
1- Use that size and beat the O line up don't let the breath for a second. Don't let them get into any type of rhythm. Set up in a 5-3 set get into the backfield and cause panic and mistakes.
2- Penetrate, Contain, and WRAP UP. Penetrate across the line of scrimmage with the D tackles, Contain with the DEs and force everything back into the teeth of the D, Wrap up don't give the backs second chance yards force them to earn every single inch nothing comes easy.
3- Physical, Physical, Physical many seem to think GW is a finesse team. And that isn't the case smash heads and meet them in the hole. When they take that 1st step out of the backfield make them pay. Hit them for 4 Qs with fresh bodies and wear that will to play. Simply take the game and wilt them over 4 Qs with fresh men and oppressing pack D.

That's my take on this game sorry for the length. But with all of that said you know I gotta go with MY MAROONS
GW-42 PM-28 best of luck to everyone still playing and safe travels to all heading to a game

Good breakdown but I disagree in the D to play for GW based on your analysis and team make up.
Based on your statement I take it that 5 guys with their hand on the ground is the predominate D you would want to play to stop a heavy run team? Curious you would go with size instead of speed.

Yes I would and if GW wasn't as fast as we are this year I wouldn't. But our D line has amazing size and speed. And our LBs and DBs will be tons of speed. Enough to make up for what would be perceived as a lack of speed on the D line. I know I beat a dead horse and it gets old but this team makes last year's team look bad, slow and out of place.

I just don't like 5 down. A 4/4, with plenty of speed and thump from the LB's would be my choice with your team but some people hate that D too. I like the concept of forcing everything to the middle and you already stated that they must tackle. That goes for everybody this weekend though. I know it's blasphemy to say it but I actually like 3/5/3 unless a team has a legit passing game and is truly able to spread you with speed. Having 4 WR's doesn't mean you are utilizing them. Plus unless you have size like you guys have, you must be creative to get pressure. If they can't predict where it's coming from then it's hard to block at this level.

I will say I think you are slightly discounting PM but I realize you are also comparing to what you believe GW can do both ways against them.

That is very fair and the 4-4 would be a great option to. For me I just feel that the 5 set will limit the number of double teams. And will keep them off our LBs. And you are correct you can't block what you don't see.

It's just plain and simple. All GW has to do is play their game. If they do this they will win this game. Not downing PM I just think if GW plays their game they are going to be hard to beat! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May be a built-in excuse but it's true. This is going to be a very good game. Either team can win. But if GW plays like they have been playing their game they will be hard to beat. And that's no excuse that's the truth.

This game comes down to the basics. Who blocks and tackles the best. PM will need to get pressure on Beamer when he does throw. GW is a little faster but with the type of offense PM runs I wouldn't be concerned with that. Just like I said on another thread, Essex had 6 or 7 guys who were faster than Riverheads fastest guy but Riverheads was able to get 4 and 5 guys out in front to block all night on the sweeps and if a power football team can do that it negates any speed factor. And it's not like PM is a slow team to begin with. Nelson will be a huge part but if Cook or Dawson get in the open field I like their chances in a foot race or going one on one with smaller cornerbacks. It is going to be a really good game no matter what and one the fans should get their monies worth out of

I do agree with you but GW will be alot bigger on the whole. And will be able to overwhelme PM with bodies not just numbers but quality kids. Should be a good one that I can't wait for. Win or not I hope for an injury free game both ways.

Dawson or Cook gets a step on anyone they won't be caught. Hasn't happened all year. Open field they are burners. They aren't even the fastest on the team. The Walker kid gets in open field you might as well set down, nobody in 1A will catch him. He ran down Moore from Covington from behind with ease. In a previous comment I seen where someone said that GW will have guys bigger than PM #64, that's a no. Hes 6'1" 340 lbs and benches over 400 lbs whoever is over him you aren't making the tackle. I'm still amazed at the people saying GW is going to put up 42, 49, one guy on a facebook post predicted 62-12. I'm still laughing at that. Good luck scoring 62 that's all I will say. I hope both teams bring it Friday night 100% so we all can see who is the real deal. GW will have a size advantage on the line maybe by an average of 10-15 lbs a guy. Remember me saying this, Nelson, Cook, and Dawson will run very hard. Each back will break one of 40 yards plus. Nelson will beat the defense up over and over as the Maroon defense wears down even with the bench play. I'm taking the Blues in a 35-21 victory.

Heck Essex has a line that consists of 385, 315 and 265 and Riverheads had no one over 250 on the line. I was just saying that technique and playing sound can control that. Galax is kinda the same way. Not the biggest but are workout warriors and constantly studying film. I think I even read last year that they put their best players on the line and not necessarily the biggest. I know back when I was in school in the 90s we ran the double wing and had guards that were like 150 to 160 but could block people twice their size. And I've seen the GW line and they do move good for their size. Definitely a very impressive bunch.

That's what I've been trying to say all year. We are not just massive we move incredibly well. They are monsters with speed and they dont just try and power you around they can but they use technique to move you. And they if you don't want to move they will move you.

I respect you, your opinion and the Blues Oldballcoach I really do. And that 62 point pick is craziness. But the reason people are picking it in the 40+ range is everyone who has seen them live knows they are very special group. They don't get tired they don't run out if bodies they don't wear down they just don't. And #64 is a load but he will be on either #71 Dylan Anderson #53 Larry Isaac or #81 Charlie Caudill. I'm not downing the kid by any stretch but they can all 3 take his lunch on a regular basis. I'll say it like I said above PM either plays there best game as a team that they have played all year or it will not be close.

PM runs old school off tackle offense. They will not change if GW stops it...it is over and a blow out. If PM can have success then I think GW wilts because they are not very physical. They are good and block well and on defense coached well and use their hands and occupy space.

To start the season only the LBs played physical now the whole team will crack you. They have improved in leaps and bounds.

GW has to be the odds on favorite to win, but good preparation on PM's part can overcome the size and speed disadvantage. I've seen it an hundred times. Frankly, I don't see that much of a speed difference, but the size difference will be obvious. PM is quick where it counts. If GW can't get out in space, their speed doesn't matter. PM has to bottle everything up and contain. I think they can do that.

I will put it this way. Dawson, Nelson, and Cook can run over you or around you. If it's a foot race I bet any money on it, Dawson and Cook will win 100% of the time they are fast enough. Talk is cheap but fun. Talk is done watch what I say. PM will bring it Friday night. They're hungry and haven't ate in awhile. A couple good shots on the qb I'm telling you GW is done. When they smell blood they go in for the kill. I've said enough. Just watch.

I'd say Moss will be the fastest player on the field Friday. Just my observation.

The Blueprint to beat GW is simple. Everyone knows you're not gonna out talent them. Not to beat a dead horse or call them Alabama, but compared to the remaining teams in the west they are just a bit more athletic and a bit deeper. That said. I've often believed being in that position is a catch 22. On one hand you should beat everyone but on the other it's easy to trust your instincts and athleticism/depth and you lose your discipline and suddenly bam. You've lost. Especially at THIS level where the talent gap is nickels and dimes. The challenge comes down to leadership. Which team has the maturity on the sidelines and in the huddle to win the game. I don't know anyone for either team, so that's impossible for me to judge. I think PM has the advantage here though, the pressure isn't on them and it is a group and a community much more hungry than GW. GW hasn't slipped since Galax, and I believe they've probably learned a lesson. However, theres obviously a certain expectation of excellence, and the only adversity they've faced this year they DID NOT handle well. Playing 0 close games this year I think hurts them a little bit too. PM is hungry, and FULL of seniors who have busted it for four years. I think this games a classic. I still like the Blues but whichever team wins - won't surprise me.

Skeeters is good too. If you're wanting a stop a bit up the road to beat crowds- Sharkeys Radford never disappoints also Fatz cafe right off exit 98 in Dublin is really good.

What about skeeters?
Yeah if you like hotdogs Skeeters is your spot. It was ranked like the 40th best hotdogs in the nation. I'll try and find the link to the site. But they really are amazing hotdogs. It's up on main street so not close to the school but nothing far either.

The BBQ sandwiches at the field were pretty damn good last year. I just don't get the whole eating out thing when the food at the field is as good as it gets. Good luck to both teams and Happy Thanksgiving
