Hair cuts for an old guy - who cuts your hair?

For years I used to go to an old Italian barber who moved from NYC. He was old school. He would offer me a free beer if I had to wait. He offered to give me rides to and from the airport. He even produced pasta sauce that was sold in local grocery stores and followed that up with a cookbook of sauces. Then he started a barber school in the same location. Just a great guy.

He eventually got sick and sold his business to one of the couples who worked for him at the school. He passed away several years ago. RIP Matt.

I still go to the same place but now I get my haircut by a Jewish Russian barber. Every cut is like a world history lesson and it’s awesome.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still thankful I need haircuts but it's been quite an evolution for me. When I was young, my dad gave me a buzz cut until my two uncles married beauticians so they always cut my hair once I got freed from my dad's buzz cuts.

My first trip to a barber shop was my junior year at Penn State. The one on South Allen Street across from The Corner Room. So I get this old guy, and he cuts my hair ridiculously short and crooked. A little kid next to me is crying, bawling his eyes out. I said to him, "What's wrong?' He said, 'It's my first time at a barber shop." I said, "ME TOO!" Which totally confounded him and stopped his crying.

So the barber asks me what do I think? I was gobsmacked at how bad it was and was speechless and he said, "You're right. It's still too long." My eyes grew big but I figure at this point maybe he can at least make it look even. Nope. It was terrible. I wore a baseball cap non-stop in public for two weeks until I could get home to see my aunt to try fix it as best she could. She told me to find a beautician in State College as she said, "A woman will know what looks good on you.' So I did that and I found one and she was great. I even drove the two hours plus to State College so she could cut my hair before my wedding.

So nowadays, I go Great Clips and places like that, and I always get the young girl with purple hair, nose ring, tattoos all over her body, hair shaved on one side of her head, which increases my dread as I'm Ken Berry from F Troop when it comes to my hair. Yet, the more unconventional the beautician looks, the better my hair cuts turn out.

You can't judge a book by its cover.

So who cuts your hair?
Let your freak flag fly!

My wife started cutting my hair during Covid (clippers, no scissors). I had to go back to Supercuts twice after she had surgery, but other than that she has cut it every two weeks. She has no experience or any training at all. My hair is short and hard to mess up, and besides I don't really care if it's messed up; I can't see it unless I look in a mirror.

My wife tried during covid but couldn’t do it. I go to Great Clips and they use the clippers set at 2 and buzz my head. The woman you described at GC must be a staple all over the country. Have one here too.

That is awesome. I went to Penn state barber shop which was same side as corner room. You went to renaldo’s,

now in the winter I go every 6 weeks to a great clips and get the freaky person. April-Oct though I buzz it myself. 8 on top and then 6 then 3 going down to sides. I live in South Carolina so messing with hair is the last thing I need.

Rumor is that if you scan this guy's haircut his barber will give you 20% off.

I have five younger brothers, and back in the 1960s we went to the barber once a month. One Saturday, brothers #3, 4 and 5 went to the local barber who employed Albert, a notoriously bad barber. Brother #3 was next up when Albert's chair emptied, but he deferred, telling #4 to go first. Brother #4 turned to 5 and said "You go." Six year old #5 jumped up yelling "He's not touching my hair." and ran out of the shop and all the way home. Numbers 3 and 4 looked at each other, rose and shaking their heads walked out the door.
